The Sacramento Kings were happy to snap their longest losing streak of the season. The New Jersey Nets would like to know how that feels.

The Kings look to build on their first victory in nearly two weeks Friday night when they host a winless Nets team trying to avoid matching the franchise's longest slide.

After winning four straight from Nov. 7-13, Sacramento (6-8) dropped four in a row prior to Wednesday's 111-97 victory over the New York Knicks.

"Well that's the way to bounce back from a disappointing game," coach Paul Westphal said of Monday's 116-105 loss at Memphis. "I just thought that we got some great professional performances from pretty much everybody that played."

Making his seventh career start Wednesday, second-year forward Donte Greene hit a career-high six 3s and matched a personal best with 24 points. He also set career highs with six blocks and five assists.

"I hope this game showed a lot of Syracuse fans why I left early," said Greene, who spent one season in college. "This was my dream, playing in the NBA. But I caught heck for leaving college early."

Rookie guard Tyreke Evans spent one season in college at Memphis, but it's hard to question his decision to leave early. He is averaging 19.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Evans fell one point shy Wednesday of scoring 20 in eight consecutive games.

"I knew I had 19 points and was trying to do everything I could to get a triple-double," said Evans, who had seven assists and a season-high 11 rebounds.

The Kings should have a good opportunity to win consecutive home games when they face the Nets, who fell to 0-15 with Wednesday's 93-83 loss at Portland.

"You bust out a speech at 0-5. You use different quotes from different champions and leaders at 0-10," guard Rafer Alston said. "But at this point it's all inside of you as individuals. You've got to find something inside of you to leave on the floor."

New Jersey is two losses shy of tying the NBA's worst start, held by the 1988-89 expansion Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers in 1998-99.

If the Nets lose Friday, they will match the franchise-record slide set during the 1977-78 season.

"You walk into the locker room and it's like a morgue," said coach Lawrence Frank, whose team is scoring an NBA-worst 84.9 points per game. "Guys are laying it all out there. It's disheartening to lose, but you keep putting efforts like this together and we'll break through."

New Jersey snapped a nine-game losing streak at Sacramento last season, winning 116-114 in overtime Nov. 26, 2008, on a jumper from Devin Harris with 12 seconds left.

In his third game back Wednesday after missing 10 with a groin injury, Harris had six points and three assists off the bench.

Nets center Brook Lopez scored a career-high 32 and posted his sixth double-double with 14 boards. Lopez had 20 points, eight rebounds and three blocks last season in Sacramento.

The Nets swept the season series against the Kings in 2008-09 for the first time in 11 years.

Winless Nets inch closer to NBA record with loss to Kings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- If anything, you'd think Sacramento might be sympathetic.

But the Kings, who had the league's worst record last season, showed no compassion on Friday night as they sent the winless New Jersey Nets down their continued dark path towards history.

Following New Jersey's 109-96 loss in Sacramento, the Nets fall to 0-16, just one game away from the NBA record of 17 consecutive losses to begin the season.

"If you have any pride or anything like that of course you are going to feel embarrassed about it," said Nets guard Rafer Alston.

"We are going down in history on the wrong side of the record books and that's somewhere we don't want to be."

Tying the undesired record looks likely at this point with a trip to Los Angeles to face the defending champion Lakers on Sunday. The Nets return home to face the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 2.

"Nobody likes to lose," said Nets guard Devin Harris. "Especially how many we've lost in a row. Everybody is taking it hard."

After playing the doormat to opponents last season with a league-worst 17 wins, the youthful Kings can empathize with the Nets' lowly situation.

"It's not fun, losing takes the wind out of your sails and really in every aspect of your life," said third-year Kings big man Spencer Hawes. "It's tough to go through but I am glad this year we turned it around and we're not going through that."

Following the game, the hanging heads of Nets players studied box scores within their quiet locker room. Players talked about the uninspired effort in a first half that they trailed 57-42.

Nets center Brook Lopez said the team started the game without a sense of urgency. When asked how the team, at this point, could have no sense of urgency, he simply shrugged and said, "If I had the answer, it wouldn't happen."

Harris called it an "emotional halftime" though, and the Nets did rally, slicing the deficit to single digits at 67-61 midway through the third quarter. Sacramento pushed back though to lead by 15 at the end of the third quarter.

The Nets battled back again in the fourth quarter, driving to the basket to swap poor shooting from the field for free throws, and closed within six points at 86-80 with just about eight minutes to play. Ultimately, Sacramento would pull away with timely 3-pointers and its own free throws.

Harris, who missed 10 games with a strained right groin before returning on Nov. 21, had a game-high 25 points -- including 13-for-17 from the free-throw line -- in his fourth game back from injury.

The Kings continue to play inspired at home, with a 6-2 record in Sacramento.

Since the injury to Sacramento's leading scorer Kevin Martin, the Kings have featured balanced lines each game, often with a new hero in each victory. On Friday, the Kings had four scorers with 15 or more points including Hawes with 16 points and rookie point guard Tyreke Evans with 21 points.

Off the bench, Beno Udrih scored 21 points and Omri Casspi scored 18.

Udrih, who has been a starter since Martin's injury, came off the bench in favor of second-year player Donte Greene.

"Nothing changed," Udrih said. "Donte had a good game last game and coach told me that he was playing really good and he is going to keep him going and keep his confidence going.

"I totally understand it. I am just going to come off the bench and play the game and help my team win basketball games."

Udrih played 33 minutes and also had five assists. Greene played 15 minutes and scored three points on just two attempts from the field.

Entering the game, opponents were averaging 47.4 percent from the field against Sacramento. The Nets, however, shot just 38.3 percent on Friday night.

"We have some guys who were really laying it on the line defensively," Sacramento coach Paul Westphal said. "They're not really a strong 3-point shooting team, so our plan was to keep them out of the paint and make them take tough shots in the crowd if they did drive."

Desperate times calls for desperate measures and late in the contest, Nets head coach Lawrence Frank resorted to his own version of "Hack-a-Shaq," swapping out the poor free-throw shooting center for Casspi.

Casspi, a 46 percent free throw shooter on the season, was fouled off the ball back-to-back times in the final minutes. He knocked down 3 of 4 free throws to extend a double-digit Kings lead before Frank waved off his plan.

Kings forward Jason Thompson smacked dramatically to the hardwood in the first quarter, landing on his back underneath the basket after being fouled by Lopez on a dunk attempt in the lane. Lopez was charged with a fragrant foul on the play. Thompson played through it, and said after the games that it was more his backside than his back that was in pain.
