Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers haven't had much trouble winning at home lately. That seems unlikely to change Friday night.

That's when the last-place Memphis Grizzlies go to the Rose Garden trying to avoid a ninth consecutive loss to the Blazers, who look to roll past another inferior opponent and see Greg Oden keep fulfilling his potential.

Portland (12-5) has won three in a row and 10 of 12 overall, including six straight home games by an average of 17.1 points.

Friday's contest ends a four-game homestand on which none of the Blazers' opponents had winning records. The closest game in that stretch came Wednesday night, though Portland never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 16 in a 93-83 victory over winless New Jersey.

Oden had another solid game with 18 points and eight rebounds, two nights after posting 24 and 12 against Chicago.

"Greg did a good job again at finishing the passes that we dropped inside," Blazers leading scorer Brandon Roy said.

Oden has averaged 18.5 points and 7.6 boards in the last four games while shooting 75.0 percent. The No. 1 overall pick in 2007 may finally be on the verge of becoming a major factor for Portland after having limited effectiveness in an injury-plagued 2008-09 season and missing all of his rookie season following knee surgery.

Maybe another positive of Oden's presence is his willingness to deflect attention away from himself and to his team, as he did after Wednesday's win when asked about his recent accomplishments.

"It was a team effort and all the guys played well, especially in that fourth quarter when we all came through and brought a lot of energy," he said. "We came together and pulled away."

Portland easily pulled away from the Grizzlies in the lone meeting this season, outscoring them by 14 in the second half to win 93-79 at Memphis on Nov. 10. It was the Blazers' eighth straight victory in the series.

The Grizzlies' last trip to the Rose Garden resulted in the team matching its lowest-scoring game of the past 14 years, losing 86-66 on March 28.

The Blazers are giving up a league-low 88.5 points per game, but Memphis has averaged 105.0 in its last six games while winning four.

However, the Grizzlies are coming off a 126-111 loss in Phoenix to open a five-game road trip.

"I told them (his players) that this is what professional basketball is like," coach Lionel Hollins said. "You have to keep digging and digging and make the other team keep working. You can't ever think the game is over. As long as it's inside 20 points, you have a chance."

Zach Randolph had 24 points and 13 rebounds, including a franchise-record 10 offensive boards. He's averaged 20.0 points in the last five games.

Grizzlies jump on Blazers early, hang on for win in Portland

PORTLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- For the Memphis Grizzlies, it was the most complete performance of the season.

"An awesome performance from start to finish," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.

For the Portland Trail Blazers, it was a 48-minute run through quicksand.

"Nobody really had it going for us," Portland point guard Steve Blake said after the Grizzlies' 106-96 victory Friday night at the Rose Garden. "But Memphis did. Memphis had it going, and we struggled on both ends of the floor."

The Grizzlies (6-10) turned out the lights early on the Blazers, jumping to a 29-point second-quarter lead, then held on to end Portland's six-game home winning streak.

"This is the best we've played against a quality opponent," Hollins said. "We've had some halves against some good teams, and in the third quarter we've faded away. Tonight was a 48-minute game of outstanding play."

Marc Gasol (19 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists) and Zach Randolph (21 points, 9 boards) led an inside assault that produced a 54-34 points-in-the paint advantage and a 42-37 edge on the boards for the Grizzlies, who shot .538 from the field.

There are holes an NBA team puts itself in through the course of a game, and there was the abyss the Blazers sunk into in the first half Friday night.

It was the Grand Canyon of deficits.

Things started normally enough. The Blazers (12-6) were on top 15-11 when the bottom fell out, as the Grizzlies scored the final 18 points of the quarter to go into the second period with a 29-15 lead.

It got worse. The streak grew to 21-0 before Portland's Andre Miller scored on a drive. Memphis then scored the next 10 points to make it a 31-2 run and a 42-17 lead.

The Grizzlies kept pouring it on. In one 16-minute stretch, the Grizzlies outscored the hometown quintet by an unfathomable 48-15 count.

Soon their advantage was 59-30, quelled only by a 9-2 Portland flurry that cut the margin to 22 at intermission.

The 61 points were the most Portland had allowed in a half this season. Memphis held a huge advantage on the boards (26-15), in points in the paint (32-16) and fast-break points (12-2).

Memphis still led 77-57 late in the third quarter when the Blazers scored the final six points to go into the fourth period down 77-63. They cut the lead down to eight with 4:11, but the Grizzlies always had an answer down the stretch, snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Blazers.

"We battled Portland most of the time last year, and even this year at home we battled them well (losing 93-79 on Nov. 10)," said Memphis guard O.J. Mayo, who had 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting along with six assists and no turnovers in 42 minutes. "Tonight we jumped on them in their place, which is a really tough arena.

"It's one of my favorite arenas to play in. It's a tough arena to play in, but we kept the crowd out of it."

Not really. There were scattered boos among the sellout throng of 20,540 when Portland's Brandon Roy didn't know the clock was winding down and wound up throwing up a wild 30-footer as time expired in the first quarter. But the Blazer partisans roared support as their team chipped away in a second-half comeback that proved futile.

"There was no energy at all," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "That team comes in and jumps on us like that ... for most of the game, there was no energy, and really no excuse."

McMillan seemed to single out Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge in his post-game remarks to the media.

"Brandon and LaMarcus are our captains," McMillan said. "They're the guys we feed off of. They're the guys who can give a lot of encouragement and support. We need that. We're going to play off of them.

"In a game like that, we need somebody to gather the troops and ride them. It's not calling them out ? (but) those are our go-to guys, the guys who make it happen."

Sure sounded like the coach was calling out Roy and Aldridge.

Roy was only 9 of 22 shooting but had a near triple-double with a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Aldridge made 7 of 16 shots and finished with 16 points and five boards.

"We're still trying to find a rhythm," Roy said. "We have a number of guys who can play, and we're still trying to figure it out how to (spread) it around.

"I don't think it's energy. I think it's guys confused on what exactly we're going to, and are we going to go inside out or outside in, or are we going to pick-and-roll. Because of that, we go through stretches where we look like we can't score."

The Blazers looked like a confused team Friday night. The Grizzlies looked like a playoff contender.

"Everybody who played for us did a great job," Hollins said. "It was just beautiful."
