Raptors-Bobcats Preview

The Toronto Raptors are one of the top offensive teams in the NBA, but they've had trouble stopping opponents during a disappointing start to the season.

While a matchup with one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league seems like a good chance for the Toronto defense to get on track, the Charlotte Bobcats appear to have overcome some of their offensive woes.

The Raptors hope to be able to slow down a Bobcats team coming off its best offensive performance of the season as the clubs meet Wednesday night in Charlotte.

Toronto (7-8) ranks among league scoring leaders with 107.4 points per game, but it's also giving up 108.1 - one of the highest marks in the NBA. The Raptors overcame another rough defensive outing Tuesday night by shooting 55.8 percent from the field in a 123-112 win over Indiana.

Jose Calderon had a season-high 21 points to lead seven Toronto players in double figures. Chris Bosh had 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots but went 5 for 19 from the field.

"I don't consider this a bad game," said Bosh, a 49.0 percent shooter on the season. "If we had lost it would have been a bad game."

While the offense was enough to carry the Raptors against the Pacers, the team knows it will need better defensive outings to start winning consistently. They've scored effectively with 105.9 points per game in their eight losses, but they're allowing 117.4 in those contests.

A meeting with the Bobcats (4-9) might look like a good opportunity for the Raptors' defense to turn things around, considering Charlotte has scored 85.3 points per game - more than only winless New Jersey. But the Bobcats have shot 50.0 percent from the field or better in three of their last four games, and they recorded a season-high point total in their last outing, a 104-88 rout of Indiana on Sunday.

Nazr Mohammed led Charlotte with 18 points while going 8 of 10 from the field, and Stephen Jackson added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists in his home debut for the Bobcats.

Charlotte acquired Jackson from Golden State on Nov. 16 with hopes the versatile forward could help spark its offense. The team went winless in his first three games to extend its losing streak to seven before Sunday's victory.

"It feels good to finally be here," said Jackson, averaging 17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists with the Bobcats. "To come in and kind of get a feel for this arena and the fans. The good thing about it was my first game was a win."

Jackson scored 24.5 points with 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists in two meetings with Toronto last season, while playing for Golden State.

The Raptors have won six of nine road games against the Bobcats, but they lost their last trip to Charlotte 112-86 on March 16. Gerald Wallace had 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Bobcats, who shot 49.4 percent from the field.

Wallace has averaged 26.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 54.3 percent in his last three against the Raptors.

Bosh had 18 points and 14 boards in that last trip to Charlotte. He has averaged 25.7 points and 9.9 rebounds while shooting 52.1 percent in 15 career games against the Bobcats.

Wallace, Bobcats find offensive groove in win over Raptors

CHARLOTTE (NBA.com exclusive) -- Gerald Wallace finally found his offense and the Charlotte Bobcats continued to play effective defense.

The Charlotte forward has struggled through the opening month of the season but scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Bobcats to a 116-81 victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday.

"He's getting better and better every day," Larry Brown said. "I love him going to the goal and getting to the free-throw line. That's a big plus."

Wallace entered the game scoring just 13.7 points per game, well below his 16.7 points per average from last season. Wednesday however saw a return of the high-flying Wallace who added 13 rebounds and a handful of highlight-reel worthy dunks.

"When our offense was struggling, we weren't getting easy baskets," Wallace said. "The past two or three games we've done a great job of forcing turnovers, putting on pressure and getting out on the break."

The Charlotte offense has become resurgent of late. That offense came alive again thanks in part to the up-tempo pace of Toronto. The Raptors were among the top three in the league in scoring and the Bobcats kept up with that pace throughout the night.

The Bobcats are also continuing to see an offensive boost with the arrival of Stephen Jackson. Charlotte was last in the league in scoring (82.4 ppg) when he was acquired from Golden State, but have now averaged 96.6 in the last five games including a season-best 116 in the win Wednesday.

"We're starting to gain that confidence in each other," Stephen Jackson said. "We're starting to know each others' spots. Practice the last two days has helped us.

"We got a chance to communicate and get on the same page and its starting to show out there on the court."

Brown is pleased with his teams progress, but knows they still have work to do.

"I thought we played terrific against Indiana, but this was our best game by far. This was a quality team. We played great. We're making progress, but we still have to figure out ways to get easy points."

Jackson scored 23 points, dished out six assists and contributed two steals and two assists. Even with that stat line Coach Brown still feels Jackson will have a lot more to offer this team.

"Stephen Jackson helps your team in every area," Brown said. "I still have to figure out how to use him."

Even with all of the offensive success, it was the defense and lack of turnovers which made Coach Brown smile.

"We gave up just eight points on turnovers which is like a miracle and we got 29 off theirs," Brown said. "That's the game right there."

That pressuring defense also created an opportunity for the backline of the Charlotte defense to shine as well, as the Bobcats recorded 16 blocked shots.

Toronto's Chris Bosh was limited for the second straight game. He scored just 18 points on 5-for-14 shooting, after netting just 16 points in the team's win Tuesday.

"We just have to be better on back-to-backs," said Toronto coach Jay Triano. "At some point you have to find the energy. I went deep into the bench to see if they had it and they didn't. I know it's tough but this is the NBA."

Unlike their win over Indiana, there wasn't anyone on the roster who stepped up to fill that void. The Raptors established season lows in both points scored and field goal percentage as they were 30-for-87 (.345) from the field.

"I think we let our offense affect our defense and that should never happen," Bosh said. "No matter how bad your offense is, if they don't score the game is tied. That shot isn't going in every time.

"You can't control that, but you can control how hard you run back, you can control putting a body on a guy, and you can control going and getting the ball and beating your guy to the ball."
