Clippers-Pacers Preview

The Los Angeles Clippers are looking for a third straight victory and could have a key contributor back to help them achieve it.

Starting guard Eric Gordon could return from a groin injury Wednesday night as the visiting Clippers look to continue their recent success by extending the Indiana Pacers' season-high losing streak to five games.

Gordon was averaging 18.9 points and 4.0 assists through seven games before missing the last eight. Los Angeles (6-9) went 3-5 without its second-year star, who left open the possibility of returning for this contest after scrimmaging with his teammates Sunday.

An Indianapolis native who played one collegiate season at Indiana, Gordon averaged 25.0 points on 54.8 percent shooting in two games against the Pacers last season. He scored 35 on 12 of 18 shooting in a 106-105 home loss to Indiana in the teams' last meeting March 7.

Having Gordon back would certainly deliver a boost as the Clippers try to match a season high with their third consecutive victory.

After a 106-99 win over Denver on Friday, Baron Davis hit a clinching layup for his only points of the game as Los Angeles beat Minnesota 91-87 on Monday.

Davis, averaging 14.9 points for the second straight season, was 1 for 10 from the field and in danger of seeing his streak of 468 consecutive regular-season games with at least one field goal snapped before making the late basket.

"When we needed him the most, he rose to the occasion,'' Clippers center Marcus Camby said. "I don't think he was frustrated. It's not about how you start, but how you finish. He's one of our go-to guys down the stretch."

With or without Gordon, Los Angeles needs more consistent scoring from Davis to continue stringing wins together. Davis is averaging 22.4 points and 8.0 assists in his last five games against the Pacers.

Los Angeles' Al Thornton had 31 points and 10 rebounds Monday for his first double-double of the season. After averaging 7.4 points and shooting 37.3 percent in his first eight games, Thornton is pouring in 19.4 on 57.6 percent shooting in his last seven.

The third-year forward scored 47 points in two games against the Pacers last season, including 25 in the Clippers' 117-109 double-overtime win at Indiana on Dec. 19.

After splitting the season series in 2008-09, Los Angeles has won consecutive games at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Danny Granger scored a season-high 36 points Tuesday, but Indiana (5-7) fell 123-112 at Toronto for its fourth straight loss after winning five in a row.

While Granger made seven 3-pointers, Indiana allowed at least 100 points for the fourth straight contest. The Pacers are giving up 102.1 points per game on the season and 110.5 during their four-game skid.

"We have aspirations of making the playoffs and this is definitely not getting us going in the right direction," said forward Troy Murphy, who's averaging 9.3 points in six games.

"We have to stop it, regardless of what it is. We have to figure it out quick.''

Averaging 25.2 points this season, Granger has been held to 9.7 per game in six career meetings with the Clippers. Injuries forced him to miss both contests against Los Angeles last season.

Pacers swingman Mike Dunleavy could return from a knee injury and make his season debut for the Pacers against the Clippers, who are coached by his father of the same name. The younger Dunleavy averaged 15.1 points in 18 games last season.

Pacers grind out win over Clippers to end four-game skid

INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Dahntay Jones and Jim O'Brien saw things differently for the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday in the most agreeable way possible.

O'Brien, the Pacers coach, said an 86-73 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in front of 12,356 at Conseco Fieldhouse was "ugly" in a beautiful, satisfying way -- a gritty, gut-it-out defensive game that ended a four-game losing streak.

As for Jones ...

Well, he didn't see it as ugly at all.

"A victory is a good victory," the sixth-year forward said after scoring nine of his 18 points in a pivotal fourth-quarter. "There are no ugly victories. When you win, you win."

The Pacers (6-7), who snapped their losing streak playing without forward/guard Danny Granger -- the team's leading scorer and lone All-Star -- trailed throughout the first three quarters, and trailed by 11 points early in the second half.

They rallied to take a one-point lead in the third quarter, then pulled away shooting 12-for-21 (57.1) in a dominant fourth quarter. Indiana outscored Los Angeles 31-14 in the fourth period.

"Winning ugly is probably a great step for your team to know that it has taken," O'Brien said. "We actually used the word 'ugly' at halftime. We said, 'We're missing shots that we'll make in the second half, and there's nothing wrong with winning ugly. Just make sure we come out of here with a win.' "

It was Indiana's first game this season without Granger, whose status is "day-to-day," according to the Pacers.

"I'm very proud of our team," O'Brien said. "We played a game with a lot of adversity around it, and played with a tremendous amount of force on the defensive end."

The Pacers, after allowing 104 or more points in each of the past four games, held the Clippers to 32.2 percent shooting (29 of 90).

Indiana forward Troy Murphy, who started and played 35 minutes in his third game back after missing six games with a back injury, had 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. Brandon Rush had 13 points and and Luther Head had 14 points.

"We stepped it up," said Pacers point guard T.J. Ford, who had 11 points and six assists. "It was a game where we had to grind it out. We know what we can do defensively. We just have to continue to put it together for four quarters."

The Pacers held Clippers center Chris Kaman, who entered the game averaging 20.5 points on 51.2 percent shooting. He was 3-for-19 from the floor and forward Al Thornton was 2 of 15 to finish with five points.

"We missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of point-blank layups," Thornton said. "They were able to get down in transition. We didn't get matched up and they converted."

Indiana (6-7), playing the second night of a back-to-back, finished the game shooting 32.2 percent from the floor, a figure helped drastically by shooting 46.2 percent (18 of 39) in the second half.

"We broke our losing streak by distributing the ball," said Jones, who has scored in double figures in all 13 games this season after doing so 11 times last season for Denver.

"We did a lot of positive things, keeping the ball moving, distributing the ball well and knocking down our shots. We have capable players that can step up and make things happen."

For two and a half quarter, Indiana played as if it missed Granger.

The Pacers, whose three-game losing streak followed a five-game winning streak, shot 17.4 percent in the first quarter. The Clippers shot 34.8 percent in the quarter and finished the half leading 43-34 despite shooting 17 of 51 from the floor (33.3 percent).

"It was an awful loss," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Offensively, we had so many opportunities. They made shots in the end. We had a double-digit lead, but we haven't been finishing."

With Baron Davis, who led the Clippers with 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting -- 3-for-4 from 3-point range -- scoring seven fourth-quarter points, Los Angeles stayed close early in the quarter. Davis tied it, 65-65, with a 16-foot turnaround jump shot with 7:20 remaining, but driving layups on back-to-back possessions by Jones gave Indiana a 69-65 lead. After a 3-pointer by Davis cut the lead to one, Indiana pulled steadily away.

"Overall, we did a pretty good job defensively," Kaman said. "Offensively, we kind of let ourselves down. They got the win and you can't take anything away from them. But we just didn't make shots."
