DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Players sat at their lockers with their heads down and frustration mounting. In their first 13 games the Nets could accept the losses, but Tuesday's 101-87 thumping at the hands of the Nuggets left them angry.
"This loss hurts a little more," guard Devin Harris said. "We didn't give our best effort." New Jersey is marching toward infamy, and performances like the one Tuesday won't help stop the drive. The Nets are 0-14, three games from tying the 1988-89 Heat and the 1999-2000 Clippers for the worst start in NBA history.
Before Tuesday they felt they had played well enough to win at least once. Against the Nuggets, they never really gave themselves a chance.
"I'm disappointed, I'm embarrassed," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "It's how we got beat. Sixty points in the paint, 29 fast-break points, 23 turnovers It's not winning basketball."
Beating the Nuggets in Denver was going to take an extraordinary effort. The Nuggets haven't lost a regular-season home game since March 9, and this year they're 6-0 at Pepsi Center. Still, the Nets had played teams tough on the road -- until Tuesday.
"That's why we're still searching for a win," center Brook Lopez said. "This wasn't an effort."
Through it all, New Jersey has tried to stay positive.
"Losing is misery for everyone. But how do you bounce back, how do you respond to it? There is no quit in any of us," Frank said. "There's a lot of fight. Those guys who have followed our team have seen that our guys have fought extremely hard most nights with eight guys."
If anyone can empathize with Frank, it was his counterpart Tuesday night. When Nuggets coach George Karl held the same position in Cleveland 25 years ago, his team lost its first 12 games and started 2-19. But Karl was able to turn things around and get the Cavaliers in the playoffs.
Still, the experience was hard.
"The misery of losing has tremendous weight to it," Karl said.
Frank and the Nets know that, but they haven't been able to stop the losing. Injuries have devastated them -- Tuesday was the first time they had at least 10 players available since Nov. 5 -- but it didn't matter against Denver. The Nuggets used runs of 15-1 in the first half and 20-3 that bridged the first half and second half to build a 23-point lead.
Carmelo Anthony, the league's leading scorer, scored his game-high 27 points in the first three quarters.
"The way we came out in the first quarter and the third quarter, digging ourselves a hole and trying to fight back from that big of a deficit is not going to be that successful," said Harris, who had 19 points in his second game back after missing the previous 10 with a strained right groin.
With Denver's starters on the bench for most of the fourth quarter, New Jersey was able to cut a 19-point deficit to 89-79, but the Nuggets responded with a 12-0 run put away the Nets.
The Nuggets, who flirted with infamy 12 years ago when they won 11 games, didn't want to be New Jersey's first victim.
"Nobody wants to be the first to lose to a team that hasn't won a game," guard Chauncey Billups said. "That's something before the game you talk about -- not us.
"You feel bad for them because you know they've got some really good players on that team. At some point I think it'll turn around for them."
The Nuggets have a chance to get fat on the lower-echelon teams this week. Their next four games are against 1-13 Minnesota (twice), 3-10 New York and 5-8 Golden State. Even though they're not playing the Celtics, Lakers or Magic, Karl said beating those teams is just as important as beating division leaders.
"Every win has value," he said.
For the Nets, any win is valuable -- and almost desperate.
"We all wanted to get the win and get the monkey off our back," Rafer Alston said.
With three games left on this Western Conference road trip, the Nets might find it hard to do. They play at Portland on Wednesday, at Sacramento on Friday and finish up against the defending champion Lakers on Sunday night.
By then they could be alone in the record book.
