The Miami Heat have certainly cooled off after a strong start. Sub-par defensive play has been a major factor, and a meeting with the suddenly surging New Orleans Hornets might not help, either.

The Heat will try to halt a three-game losing streak Sunday night by beating the Hornets for the first time in nearly three years.

Miami (7-5) opened the season by winning six of seven, but have since lost four of five and their current losing streak matches their longest from last season.

The Heat haven't dropped four in a row since a seven-game slide from March 26-April 6, 2008. Miami took a step closer to that dubious mark Friday, losing 120-113 at Toronto.

"One thing you learn in this league is you don't get too high, you don't get too low," said guard Dwyane Wade, who had 30 points after scoring a season-low 15 in a 105-90 loss at Atlanta two nights earlier. "When we were 6-1, if you'd asked me I'd say we've got to continue to get better. Now we're 7-5 and we've got to continue to get better."

One area where the Heat need improvement is defense. They've allowed an average of 103.2 points over the last five games, up from 88.6 over the first seven.

Miami allowed 43 points in the second quarter against Toronto to trail by 20 at the half.

"To just let out the floodgates and allow them 69 points in the first half, that is not our game," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We have to take notice and take it to heart. ... We've worked too hard and fought too hard for this identity to just surrender it this quickly."

The Heat have lost four in a row and six of seven to the Hornets (6-8). They haven't beaten New Orleans since a 101-99 win at American Airlines Arena on Dec. 18, 2006.

The Hornets' start to 2009-10 wasn't nearly as productive as Miami's. They dropped eight of 11, firing coach Byron Scott nine games in, and lost guard Chris Paul to a sprained ankle that will likely keep him out until early December.

After falling 121-98 at Atlanta on Nov. 14 in its first game without the two-time All-Star, New Orleans has won three in a row and snapped the Hawks' seven-game winning streak on Saturday, 96-88.

Solid play from rookie guards Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton has helped offset the loss of the Hornets' floor leader.

Collison, who has started all four games in place of Paul, scored 22 points and dished out a season-high 11 assists Saturday for his first double-double. Thornton added 21 points after posting 19 in a 110-103 win over Phoenix two nights earlier.

"When you're a rookie you've got to come in and make a name for yourself," said Thornton, who is averaging 11.8 points. "Me and Darren from Day 1 when we came in, we knew we could play this game, and we just stuck together throughout ... and we prevailed (Saturday)."

New Orleans is also getting production from Peja Stojakovic. The oft-injured swingman is averaging 20.5 points over the last four games after managing 8.0 over the first 10.

He had 24 points in a 93-87 overtime win at Miami on April 7.

Haslem hits jumper to top Hornets, 102-101

MIAMI (NBA.com exclusvie) -- When the Miami Heat needed a clutch shot on Sunday against New Orleans, a familiar face stepped to the fore. No, it wasn't guard Dwyane Wade, the usual late-game hero; it was forward Udonis Haslem, who is likely the Heat's second-best shooter in the clutch.

Haslem, who missed the last two games with a strained right shoulder, banked in a 15-foot jumper with 15.4 seconds left to deliver Miami a 102-101 victory that ended the Heat's three-game losing streak. But the game-winner wasn't Haslem's only big shot of the night for Miami (8-5). The five-year-starter-turned-reserve hit a baseline jumper that tied the game at 100 with 45.7 seconds left. "He's done that for us over his (entire) career," said Wade, who ended with a game-high 31 points.

On somewhat of a busted final play - the designed screen never developed, according to coach Jeff Bower - forward David West ended up waving everyone off and trying to take Miami center Jermaine O'Neal one-on-one. What resulted was an awkward-looking off-balance shot from just beyond the free throw line, and perhaps a reinforcement of the notion the Hornets need injured All-Star guard Chris Paul for just such situations. Paul is out with a sprained left ankle. But West didn't seem to mind having the ball.

"In that situation I can live and die with me taking the shot up top," West said. "Late game I want the ball in my hands."

Miami shot 52.1 percent from the field, its best total since shooting 56.6 percent against New York in the opener, and had five players score in double digits. And, for one night, or at least part of one night, the Heat seemed to re-discover the defensive identity coach Erik Spoelstra said his team lost during its three-game skid. It held New Orleans to 39.6 percent shooting, the sixth time it's held an opponent to less than 41 percent.

"I think it's fitting for us to have a game where we need a win for it to end on a final defensive possession to make a stand," Spoelstra said.

But all wasn't perfect for Miami defensively. Hornets rookie guard Marcus Thornton (career-best 24 points off the bench) made life miserable for the Heat.

"I felt good the whole night, but unfortunately it doesn't matter when we don't win," he said. Miami, which entered with an 0-5 record in games it allowed 100 or more points, took an 86-83 lead into the fourth quarter. By then Thornton had established himself as a major pain in the neck. He entered the fourth period with 23 points, mainly on the strength of going 5-for-6 from three-point range. The five three-pointers was also a career-best, and by a sizeable margin; his previous best was two. But Thornton struggled late, managing only one point in the fourth quarter. He went to the free throw line with 35 seconds left and the game tied at 100. He missed the first shot and the second for a 101-100 lead that allowed Haslem's heroics.

Curiously, Miami drafted Thornton (second round, No. 43 overall), the former Southeastern Conference Player of the Year from Louisiana State, but traded him to New Orleans for a pair of future second-round picks (2010, '12).

The Hornets, who, such as the Heat, had five players score in double digits, shot 25 percent (5-for-20) from the field in the fourth quarter. Forward James Posey (14 points, four three-pointers) was 2-for-6; rookie guard Darren Collison (11 points) was 0-for-4; Thornton was 0-for-3; and forward Peja Stojakovic was 2-for-3, including hitting a three-pointer to give New Orleans a 100-98 lead, but he didn't get a look on the game's final play.
