Pistons-Suns Preview

While the Phoenix Suns have generally looked strong in their climb to the top of the Western Conference, they've had some lackluster performances in their losses.

The Suns look to bounce back from one of those defeats and avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time this season Sunday when they host the Detroit Pistons, who are trying to snap a four-game skid.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season, Phoenix (10-3) has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the league. With a potent offense led by Steve Nash, the Suns have scored 100 or more points in each of their first 13 games and are tied with Dallas atop the West.

While it has been an encouraging start overall, Phoenix has looked flat in its losses to Orlando, the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans, getting outscored by an average of 16.0 points.

Struggling to take advantage of a Hornets team playing without injured All-Star point guard Chris Paul on Thursday, the Suns suffered a 110-103 road loss.

Phoenix allowed the Hornets to connect on 52.0 percent (13 of 25) of their 3-pointers, and also got pushed around in the paint. New Orleans outrebounded the Suns 56-38 and the Hornets' 25 offensive rebounds helped produce 38 second-chance points, compared to 13 for Phoenix.

"We didn't really have any attention to detail, we gave up a lot of rebounds and our concentration and effort weren't good enough. And if we're honest, we didn't deserve to win," said Nash, who finished with 13 points and 10 assists. "Hopefully it's a lesson we'll learn from, and we won't have many nights like that this year."

Phoenix hopes it can turn things around against a road-weary Detroit team coming off a 100-97 overtime loss to Utah on Saturday.

Ben Gordon, who is averaging 30.0 points in his last six games against the Suns, scored 25 Saturday but missed a potential tying 3-pointer in the final second as the Pistons (5-8) suffered their fourth straight defeat.

Detroit's biggest problems have come on the road, where it has lost six of seven including the first three of this four-game trip.

The Pistons are now in danger of completing their longest winless road trip since going 0-5 from Feb. 24-March 2, 2003.

Detroit has won seven of nine in Phoenix, but one of the defeats came in last season's visit, 104-86 on Nov. 16, 2008.

The Suns, who are 4-0 at home this season, also won in Detroit in 2008-09, sweeping the season series for the first time since 1999-2000. Nash averaged 16.0 points and 14.0 assists against Detroit in the two meetings while Amare Stoudemire averaged 23.5 points and 9.0 rebounds.

Stoudemire is averaging 25.3 points on 63.4 percent shooting in three games since finishing with a season-low eight points and shooting 2 of 15 in a 121-102 loss to the Lakers on Nov. 12. He scored a team-high 23 in Thursday's defeat.

Strong effort on glass propels Suns to win over Pistons

PHOENIX (NBA.com exclusive) -- For the Suns, the first shot isn't necessarily the last shot.

And that's a great thing for a smallish basketball team.

The Suns manhandled the visiting Pistons on the boards early Sunday night en route to an easy 117-91 win.

At 11-3, the Suns are tied with the Hawks for the NBA's best record, even though they've only played five home games (they're 5-0, and they've won 14 straight at home going back to last season).

The Suns were worried, if not outright panicked, by a poor showing on the boards during their mediocre preseason.

But entering Sunday, the Suns ranked a surprising 10th in offensive rebounding percentage percentage at .276 (the NBA average is .265) and 16th in overall rebounding (.497), just under the 50 percent average.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry acknowledged a "sense of relief" over the showing.

"It was a huge concern because we had not done a good job in the preseason," Gentry said.

The potential for trouble "reared its head" for the first time in a loss Thursday at the Hornets, when they were outmatched 56-38 on the boards.

The Hornets grabbed 25 offensive rebounds compared to the Suns' 24 defensive boards.

So the Suns re-emphasized the matter before Sunday's game.

They ended up almost dead even (the Pistons had a 39-38 edge), but the Suns killed them, 22-13 in the first half, when the game was decided.

The Suns broke open the game late in the first half and led 58-42 at the break.

They got eight rebounds from Grant Hill and Louis Amundson and seven more from Channing Frye.

For the season, the Suns are getting 7.5 boards per game from both Amar'e Stoudemire and Hill, 5.6 from Frye, 5.4 from Jason Richardson plus 4.2 each from reserves Jared Dudley and Amundson.

Even when the Pistons hit the boards, they didn't necessarily produce, as when Rodney Stuckey missed an uncontested put back at the start of the second half.

Frye responded by hitting a 3-pointer for a 61-44 lead.

Stoudemire and Charlie Villanueva spent a while guarding each other (though Villanueva started out on Channing Frye while Ben Wallace took Stoudemire), with the Suns' big man getting the better results.

Stoudemire shot 9-for-14 for a game-high 21 points, while Villanueva was 5-for-13 for 13 points.

Stoudemire says he is "slowly" seeing his basketball skills return after taking seven months off from basketball activities because of two eye operations.

"That's the longest I've gone without basketball, ever," Stoudemire said.

Ben Gordon was ineffective; the Pistons' guard shot 3-for-11 for 10 points.

Gentry praised the defense of Jason Richardson and Leandro Barbosa.

"In this building, he [Gordon] usually walks away with 25 or 30 points."

Richardson said, "We just tried to crowd him and make it tough for him."

For the Pistons (5-9), the losses continue to mount for a team missing two key players. Richard Hamilton has been out since the opener with a sprained right ankle, while Tayshaun Prince has played in just three games because of a ruptured disc in his lower back.

Prince's consecutive-game streak of 497 seems like ancient history.

What's left seems like a mish-mash of a team that on the one hand likes to go with three guards, yet doesn't score much.

Their 92.6-point average is the league's fifth lowest.

John Kuester, the team's first-year head coach, praised his team beforehand, saying, "Our energy has been outstanding" on this road trip.

But not on this night, when they were playing their fourth game in six nights.

"We were playing a tired team," Gentry said. "We did a good job of jumping on them early."

The Pistons finished the trip 0-4.

"There are no excuses in this league," Kuester said.

"Our frame of mind was right, but sometimes you have to lie to your body...and just say, "Hey, you got to go.'

"But unfortunately, we didn't have the juice that we've had."

Gordon said, "You definitely have to play tricks with yourself.

"You just have to lose yourself in the game and just get so into it that you aren't even thinking of your fatigue level.

"That's part of the NBA. Some nights it's just tough."
