The New York Knicks decided it was against their best interest to sign Allen Iverson, figuring they didn't want to hinder their rebuilding effort by giving minutes to a player who wasn't considered a building block.

The New Jersey Nets are hoping the return of perhaps their most integral element will speed up their own overhaul - or at least produce a win.

The desperate Nets will have All-Star guard Devin Harris available for the first time in three weeks Saturday afternoon in East Rutherford as they look to avoid an 0-13 start against the Knicks.

New York (2-9) and New Jersey have been mentioned as potential destinations for this summer's upcoming crop of big-name free agents, but nothing the teams have shown on the court has served as an enticing recruiting pitch.

The Knicks' 1-9 start was their worst through 10 games in franchise history, but they snapped a six-game slide Wednesday, using 48 combined points from Larry Hughes and Al Harrington off the bench to beat Indiana 110-103.

As rumors of adding Iverson, who was waived by Memphis on Tuesday after playing just three games, swirled in the locker room after the win, Harrington spoke up in favor of signing Iverson, saying "he can only do positive things."

On Friday, though, the Knicks passed on Iverson, choosing to let coach Mike D'Antoni continue to integrate four first- or second-year players into his system.

"We feel like that could hurt our development in the future, so we want to go the way we're going,'' general manager Donnie Walsh said. "There will be other things we can do during the year that will be more in line with what our philosophy has been entering into this.''

The Nets (0-12) clinched their own worst start in franchise history with their sixth loss, but have since added six more. Coach Lawrence Frank's team led by seven at halftime in Milwaukee on Wednesday, but fell apart in the third quarter en route to a 99-85 loss, its first 12-game skid since dropping 14 in a row in 1990.

The NBA record is 17 straight losses to start a season, shared by the 1988-89 expansion Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers in the lockout-shortened 1999 season.

"I don't even focus on 0-17,'' said Frank, the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference. "Obviously, it's very disappointing to be where we're at. Right need what we need to do is have a day of practice and get ready for the game against New York.''

The Nets at least have reason to hope they can turn it around. Harris, who averaged 21.3 points and 6.9 assists and was named to the All-Star team last season, is expected to come off the bench Saturday, which would be his first game since injuring his groin Oct. 30.

Harris certainly looked like an All-Star against the Knicks last season. He averaged 33.5 points and 8.5 assists in two games versus New York before missing the final two meetings with a strained left shoulder.

The road team won all four games in 2008-09, and Harrington had 39 points in a 121-109 win in New Jersey on Dec. 10.

The Nets' chances of picking up their first win may depend on the performance of Brook Lopez against New York's David Lee. Lopez averaged 19.5 points in New Jersey's two wins over the Knicks last season, and 7.0 in the two losses.

Nets fall to 0-13, despite return of Harris

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Must-win games are not usually too common in the first month of an NBA season.

Yet there were the winless Nets, at home, playing a rival team with its own struggles, while returning their best player before going on a West Coast swing where wins have been hard to come by even in the best of times.

Somehow it still wasn't enough. The Knicks' 98-91 win on Saturday at IZOD Center dropped New Jersey to 0-13, despite the return of Nets point guard Devin Harris from a 10-game injury absence.

"It would take a toll on anybody," said Harris, who finished with 12 points and seven assists in 26 minutes in his first game back since Oct. 30. "Obviously nobody wants to start 0-and-whatever it is. What hurts more is so many close games we're losing.

"If we were getting blown out every game, I think everybody would be like. OK, we need to change something up. But we're right there each and every game. We've just got to find a way to overcome the last six minutes."

New Jersey -- and coach Lawrence Frank -- now enter frightening territory with road games against the Nuggets, Blazers, the improving Kings and the Lakers. The NBA's all-time worst start to a season is 0-17, set by the Heat in 1988 and Clippers in 1998.

And as the Knicks attested, there's definitely a growing aversion to being New Jersey's first victim in the 2009-10 season.

Said Knicks forward Al Harrington: "We didn't want to be that team."

It was Harrington putting the game out of reach for New York. His 3-pointer with one minute left put the Knicks up 94-87, after the Nets had reduced a 15-point deficit to one in the fourth quarter.

New York won its second straight to improve to 3-9. Harrington and Danilo Gallinari finished with 17 points each, while David Lee added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Knicks were almost as desperate for a win as they take to the road after Sunday's home game against Boston. Away games against the Lakers, Kings and Nuggets this week start a swing where they play five out of seven on the road.

"We have a good feeling," Gallinari said. "We just have to keep building and keep doing our jobs like we are doing now."

Harris, an All-Star for the Nets last season and widely regarded as the team's best player, had missed 10 straight games with a strained right groin.

He entered the game with 4:20 left in the first quarter to warm applause and turned over the ball on his first possession. But it wasn't long before New Jersey started seeing what it had been missing as Harris started finding Brook Lopez and rookie Terrence Williams on rapid-fire bounce passes. He took two Knicks off the dribble and finished with an emphatic dunk late in the first half that made his return official.

The problem for the Nets was they still trailed 52-43 at the half. The Knicks opened up a 72-57 lead midway through the third quarter, but New Jersey fought back with a 16-2 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to cut the Knicks' lead to 74-73.

"I feel good," Harris said. "I did everything I wanted to do. I got to the rim, tried to control the pace as much as I could in the first half. In the second half, they crowded a little bit more. I tried to create some open opportunities for my teammates."

Chris Douglas-Roberts led the Nets with 24 points, including a 19-footer with 1:57 left to cut the Nets' deficit to 89-87. But Lee answered back with a layup off a Chris Duhon feed. Harris missed a short jumper on the Nets' next try before Harrington landed the 3-point dagger.

"I take every loss very hard," Douglas-Roberts said. "This many losses without a win, I really don't know what to feel. I don't really know where I'm at right now. Mentally, it's tough."

While injuries and an undefined ownership situation have cooled the proverbial hot seat any coach would be on at 0-13, there is also the growing notion that the longer the team goes without a win, the more the call for change will come. Frank has shown a sense of humor about his plight, stating that "the guillotine" might be out with such a large contingent of reporters available for his pre-game press conference.

"I'll take 100 percent responsibility for where we're at because these guys have worked their tails off," Frank said. "And I do believe it happens. If we continue to have these habits and we don't allow frustration to lead to a lack of confidence and a lack of faith, I think we will break through."
