PORTLAND, Ore. (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Portland Trail Blazers returned to an old lineup, leaving Martell Webster to rediscover his shooting touch in a 106 -78 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
After going 7-2 with a three-guard lineup of Steve Blake, Andre Miller and Brandon Roy, Webster joined Portland's starting lineup and finished with a season-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. It was his first career double-double.
"I'm honored to be in the starting lineup, but the lineup didn't have anything to do with it. It was more about going out there and continuing to shoot without hesitating," said Webster, who hit four 3-pointers in the second half.
"I was trying to figure out mechanically ways to fix my shot and adjust it so I could be more comfortable with it. With shooters, you can't think too much. It has to be more about instinct."
While Portland finished with six players scoring in double-digits, Minnesota is simply trying to figure out a way to win on the road this season. The loss drops the Wolves to 0-6 on the road and 0-9 in Portland since Dec. 7, 2005.
After being down as many as 11 points, Minnesota grabbed a 45-44 lead early in the third quarter only to watch Portland build its lead to 29 at one point. Such is life for the Wolves, who only scored 15 in the third.
"We're not secure as a team. We're not together as a team," a frustrated Wolves coach Kurt Rambis explained.
"I thought our guys played really well for tremendous stretches of the ball game. It just got to a point where we made some defense lapses. We don't have enough experience as a team that whenever we get into those tight situations, we know what to do with the ball. Our experience isn't there, our knowledge isn't there yet."
However, Minnesota actually had a couple bright spots.
Oleksiy Pecherov came off the bench and notched his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds, while Al Jefferson matched a season high with 10 boards. Yet it was Minnesota's second unit that kept the game close. Twenty-five of the Wolves' 37 first-half points came from the bench.
Portland was too tough, too early and too often.
"We played well up to the third quarter, with about five minutes to go," said the Wolves' Ryan Gomes.
"After that they just ran off with it. We didn't get anything on the offensive end and that's where the game was lost. You can't win that way."
By the end of the night, Minnesota was overpowered by Portland's balanced offensive attack of LaMarcus Aldridge (10 points), Greg Oden (16 points), Steve Blake (14 points) and Joel Przybilla (14 points).
"Our guys didn't acknowledge when guys started making shots and didn't start running guys off their spots so they don't continue to get hot. Our guys couldn't find ways make stops. They [Portland] cause a lot of problems for a lot of teams defensively," Rambis said.
With Webster starting at small forward, Andre Miller returned to his reserve point guard role, leaving head coach Nate McMillan to say the needed change allows more balance for Portland, which is missing both Travis Outlaw (left foot stress fracture) and Nicolas Batum (shoulder).
"I just wanted to get back to that lineup and get Martell in the game and get us a balance," McMillan said.
"I wanted to try and get Brandon [Roy] some touches and get Andre [Miller] with that second group, running that second team. I think we can take advantage of Andre posting and running the team and running some sets with those guys for that group."
McMillan admitted he plans to stick with the new lineup moving forward.
Roy certainly got his touches with the lineup change and made good, finishing with 18 points.
"For me I'm back playing closer to the ball and I can do what I do best, which is to create opportunities for myself and my teammates. I can get into a better rhythm earlier in the game. I'm back at my natural position," Roy said, before deflected the praise to Webster.
"I knew he'd be good with the starting unit. The first part of the season he wasn't playing bad. We just wanted him to come out and have confidence more than anything. The biggest thing is to play with confidence and I think he did a great job of that tonight. We all know Martell can score."
Now Webster knows he can score, too.
The question remains, when will Minnesota win on the road?
