Kings-Mavericks Preview

A subpar game from Dirk Nowitzki didn't stop the Dallas Mavericks from continuing their home dominance over the Sacramento Kings last season. Now, the All-Star is carrying more than his share of the scoring load.

With Nowitzki helping them overcome injuries, the Mavericks look to extend an 11-game home winning streak against the Kings on Friday night.

Though Nowitzki was held to 12 points, Dallas beat Sacramento 116-95 at the American Airlines Center on Feb. 21, the teams' last meeting. The Mavericks (9-3) have averaged 116.2 points and shot 43.9 percent from 3-point range during their home winning streak versus the Kings (5-5).

Josh Howard had 20 points for Dallas in the last contest, but he was one of three starters out with injuries for Wednesday night's game against San Antonio. The Mavericks, though, got 41 points from Nowitzki and won 99-94 in overtime for their fourth straight victory.

Howard has missed eight straight games as he recovers from offseason left ankle surgery, Shawn Marion sat out with a sprained left ankle sustained in a 115-113 OT win at Milwaukee on Monday night and Dallas has been without Erick Dampier the last three games due to an unknown illness.

Howard isn't ready to come back, Dampier has been undergoing tests to determine the nature of his illness and Marion's status is uncertain.

The Mavs will be just fine if Nowitzki continues his clutch play. He had 11 points after regulation against San Antonio and made a winning, buzzer-beating jumper in OT against the Bucks.

"He's really playing at a high level," Dallas forward Drew Gooden said. "We need that because of all the injuries we have right now and he's doing everything he can to carry this team."

The Mavs did get some good news on the injury front, with Tim Thomas making his debut after sitting out the first 11 games while recovering from offseason knee surgery. Thomas, signed in July, had two points in 14 minutes.

Sacramento has injury issues of its own. The Kings are without Kevin Martin, who will miss at least another six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his left wrist Nov. 9. Andres Nocioni missed a 101-87 loss to Chicago, his former team, Tuesday night due to a hip pointer.

Nocioni's status is uncertain. Donte Greene started at forward in his place, scoring 24 points in the Kings' first loss in five games.

Greene, a first-round pick in 2008, made his fifth career start. Tyreke Evans, selected fourth overall in this year's draft, has given the Kings a consistent scoring threat with Martin out.

Evans had 20 points against the Bulls, becoming the first Sacramento rookie since Lionel Simmons in 1991 to reach 20 in five straight games. The 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 23.0 points during that span.

Evans, though, committed four of the Kings' 21 turnovers against Chicago. Sacramento averaged 20.6 turnovers in its last three games.

"We have a young team that tries to go too fast sometimes," point guard Beno Udrih said. "Those kinds of mistakes hurt us because they got easy layups."

Udrih averaged 14.5 points and 6.2 assists in four games against the Mavericks last season, but the Kings lost three of those contests.

Kings rally, fall short to Mavericks 104-102

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Sacramento was the younger and quicker team Friday night, with rookie guard Tyreke Evans and second-year forward Jason Thompson showing plenty of flash and dash.

Dallas was the deeper and more disciplined squad, however, and withstood a frantic rally to maintain its homecourt dominance of the Kings with a 104-102 victory. Led by sixth man Jason Terry's 20 points, the Mavericks' bench outscored the Sacramento reserves by a lopsided 52-14 margin and helped force 21 turnovers.

It was the fifth straight win for the Mavericks overall and their 12th consecutive win against the Kings in Dallas, a streak that stretches back to an overtime loss in February 2003.

The Mavs had more bench players (three) in double figures than starters (two). Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points and seven assists and Jason Kidd posted a double-double with 15 points (5-for-9 3-pointers), 11 assists and three steals. Drew Gooden tallied a season-high 16 rebounds, including a career-high nine on the offensive glass. Reserves Kris Humphries (15) and Tim Thomas (11) both had season highs in points and Dallas improved to 6-0 when dishing at least 25 assists (28).

Evans was 13-for-21 and led the Kings with 29 points, 10 assists and seven boards. Beno Udrih added 20 points and Thompson had 18 points and eight rebounds. Andres Nocioni, who missed Tuesday's loss to the Bulls with a hip pointer, started and scored 15 points. Sacramento shot 53.1 percent, including 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in a wild fourth quarter.

The Mavericks appeared to have the victory on ice with a 95-84 lead, their largest of the game, and less than 2 minutes on the clock. They led 98-88 after a 3-pointer by Kidd with 1:15 to play, but the Kings wouldn't quit.

A layup by Udrih and a free-throw by Evans made it 98-91. After a driving basket by Terry, Udrih drained the first of three 3-pointers by Sacramento in the game's final 25 seconds. Terry hit two free throws for a 102-94 lead, but Udrih answered with a reverse layup. Rookie Omri Casspi then picked off an errant pass by Nowitzki and fed Evans, who drilled a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.1 seconds left. Terry came through with two clutch free throws for a 104-99 lead with 1.6 ticks remaining -- decisive points as it turned out, because Casspi knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Udrih and Evans combined for 25 of the Kings' 37 points in the final quarter.

"To come in here and have a chance to knock off Dallas and play them the way we did, I was very impressed," said Sacramento head coach Paul Westphal, who was in the Mavericks' front office last season and an assistant coach for Dallas in 2007-08. "We just couldn't get over the hump with our turnovers, or it would've made it a little more interesting. But I love our intensity and how our guys are playing together."

Evans has scored at least 20 points in six straight games, the longest streak by a Kings rookie since Lionel Simmons' seven-game run from Feb. 12-27, 1991.

"The kid is a real player and he's going to be around for a long time," Westphal said. "There are a few things he can work on and improve, but find me a 20-year-old who doesn't have a few things he can work on and improve. We're really glad to have him."

The "kiddie Kings" have four players age 21 or younger and nine who are 25 or younger. Based on opening-day NBA rosters, Sacramento is the third-youngest team in the league, while Dallas and San Antonio are the oldest. Evans, who is 20, spent much of the night matched up with the 36-year-old Kidd. Experience had the slight edge over youth on this night.

"Our team is a veteran ball club, so you can expect down the stretch in the fourth quarter we're going to execute and we're going to get people the ball that need to have it," Terry said. "It was another gritty win for us and we'll take it."

Shawn Marion missed his second straight game for the Mavericks with an ankle injury, while Erick Dampier missed his fourth game with a still unknown illness. The 14-year veteran was averaging 9.7 rebounds, 7.6 points and 2.2 blocks with three double-doubles through nine games, but there is no timetable for his return. He stayed overnight in a Detroit-area hospital last Sunday after becoming lightheaded during pregame warm-ups.

"I think we'll know sometime next week where things are at," Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. "I know there are still some tests being done and so we're going to have to just go through this, and let this battery of things go on and be absolutely sure of the prognosis."
