It's been two weeks since the Milwaukee Bucks needed to bounce back from a loss. Facing the New Jersey Nets should help their chances.

One of the NBA's early surprises, the Bucks look to extend the Nets' franchise-high, season-opening losing streak to 12 games Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.

Two nights after point guard Brandon Jennings set a Milwaukee rookie record with 55 points in a 129-125 win over Golden State, the Bucks (5-3) had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 115-113 overtime loss to Dallas on Monday.

Milwaukee rallied from a 20-point deficit, but still dropped to 4-1 at home where it's averaging 109.6 points per contest.

"At one point we were down by 20 but we kept fighting, that's all you can ask for from us," Jennings told the Bucks' official Web site.

Jennings had 25 points with eight assists for the Bucks, who are off to their best start since the 2005-06 season when they last made the playoffs.

Though Jennings was 8 of 22 from the field, he is shooting 53.3 percent while averaging 37.3 points in his last three contests. Overall, he's averaging 25.5 this season with 5.5 assists.

The Bucks are tied for second in the Central Division after going 34-48 last season.

Milwaukee's early-season success, which has come with star Michael Redd limited to the first two games because of a knee injury, is one reason why coach Scott Skiles expects more out of his club after their first loss since falling at Chicago on Nov. 3.

"That's our second game in a row where there was very little defensive intensity, very little will to stop the other team at all. We paid for it by getting way behind," he said.

Skiles hopes his team avoids falling behind the injury-riddled Nets (0-11), who are starting to close in on the NBA-record 17-game skids to open a season shared by Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Without injured stars Devin Harris (groin), Courtney Lee (groin) and Yi Jianlian (knee), New Jersey is trying to remain competitive, but struggled to do so Tuesday with just eight players dressed.

"We understand we only have so many bullets," said coach Lawrence Frank, who's team ranks near the bottom of the league averaging 84.4 points per game. "With eight guys, now you've got to battle that much harder."

Chris Douglas-Roberts scored a career-high 27 points and Brook Lopez added 26 with 16 rebounds, but the Nets shot 36.3 percent - including 1 for 11 from 3-point range - and committed 19 turnovers.

"It's nothing if we don't win,'' said Douglas-Roberts, who's averaging 15.8 points. "My numbers don't matter if we're losing because you are labeled a loser. It doesn't matter what you're doing on a losing team. Nobody really cares. I know I don't.''

Lopez has done his part to step up for the Nets, averaging a team-leading 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds. The 7-foot, second-year forward averaged 16.0 points and 10.5 against Milwaukee last season.

Though these teams split their four-game season series in 2008-09, New Jersey has won five of the last seven meetings in Milwaukee.

Bucks turn it around in 2nd half to keep Nets winless

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- Earning the reputation of a strong third-quarter team has its ups and downs.

Sure, those big third quarters come in handy. But on the flip side, the Milwaukee Bucks have needed their big third quarters thanks to sluggish first-half play.

The Bucks opened the second half with a 15-0 salvo that eventually doomed the winless New Jersey Nets 99-85 Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.

The Nets suffered their 12th straight loss to open the season.

"We win as a team and lose as a team," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said.

The Nets have only done the latter thus far.

Center Andrew Bogut had 21 points and 11 rebounds, forward Carlos Delfino had his best game of the young season with 21 points and six assists, and rookie sensation Brandon Jennings had 19 points and eight assists to lead the 6-3 Bucks, who are 4-1 in the first five games of a six-game homestand.

Able to dress just eight healthy players, New Jersey put a scare into Milwaukee in the first half.

Rookie Terrence Williams, who was picked one spot behind Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings, scored all of the points in a 10-0 run that gave New Jersey a 40-29 lead with 6:06 left in the second quarter.

After entering the game shooting a league-worst 40.3 percent, the Nets finished the half at 52.5 percent (21-for-40) and held a 48-41 lead. Williams had 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting.

Those numbers -- and the game -- changed drastically in the third quarter.

The Nets missed their first nine shots after the break, and Jennings jump-started the Milwaukee offense with his first 3-pointer of the night.

Delfino added a 3, and Jennings added a steal and dunk and another three to cap a 15-0 run that gave Milwaukee a 56-48 edge.

The Bucks led 69-60 after three, and the Nets never got any closer in the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee's defense held New Jersey to 17.4 percent shooting (4-for-23) in the third quarter and 23.7 percent (9-for-38) in the second half.

"We just had much more intensity in the third quarter," said Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles. "We started getting after it on the defensive end and held them to 12 points. As has been the case, we were able to get stops and get out in the open floor and get easier baskets. In the first half we were just taking it out of the net too much."

That followed a disturbing pattern of late for the Bucks. In Monday's 115-113 loss to Dallas, the Bucks allowed the Mavericks to shoot 67.6 percent in the first half and fell behind by as many as 18 points before forcing overtime.

In a 129-125 victory over Golden State on Saturday, Milwaukee allowed the Warriors to shoot 56.4 percent in the first half and trailed by as many as 13.

"I hope not," Skiles said when asked if the difference between his team's play in the first and second half was the result of something he said at halftime. "I said some things, but as I said [Tuesday] at practice, every team is known for something and each individual player is known for something.

"You're either known for being a terrible team, terrible defensively, maybe a terrible shooting team, or you're a good shooting team or a good defensive team. Whatever it is, you're known for something. We're trying to impress upon our guys that we like guys to be reliable all the way around.

"That's what being a professional is about. Not great half or terrible half or good quarter, bad quarter, good intensity, bad intensity. We want to have it all the time. We're not there yet, but we're working in that direction."

The Nets had Devin Harris (groin) and Keyon Dooling (hip) on the bench in street clothes and Yi Jianlian (knee), Courtney Lee (groin), Jarvis Hayes (hamstring) and Eduardo Najera (back) were not with the team.

They were led by guard Chris Douglas-Roberts, who posted 31 points and 10 rebounds. Terrence Williams finished with 20, but center Brook Lopez was the only other Net in double figures with 11 points.

"When you have just eight guys, we need to have everyone to be in tune all the time," Frank said. "Like [Tuesday] night, some guys were, some guys weren't. Tonight, the same thing. Collectively, we didn't play 48 minutes of basketball."

Neither did the Bucks, but they had the depth and firepower to overcome their shortcomings after another poor first half.

"Scott Skiles came in here and said his words, that we have to come out and compete," Jennings said. "He basically said to play hard, that we really don't want them to win their first game on our home court."
