Pistons-Trail Blazers Preview

Their road trip was a major success, but the Portland Trail Blazers weren't satisfied with how it ended.

Back home for seven of their next nine games, the Trail Blazers look to rebound from their first loss in seven games Wednesday night when they face a Detroit Pistons team trying to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Portland (8-4) returns to the Rose Garden following a 4-1 trip that ended with Monday's 99-95 overtime loss to Atlanta. The Trail Blazers led by 12 in the third quarter and nine heading into the fourth, but they could not close out their seventh straight victory.

"It's disappointing because we had a big lead and we didn't do a good job of taking care of the ball and defending," said two-time All-Star Brandon Roy, who averaged 18.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists on the trip. "But they beat us up on the inside and dominated the paint."

Despite the disheartening finish, Portland held its opponents to 82.8 points and 39.6 percent shooting on the seven-day trip. The Trail Blazers lead the NBA in both categories - limiting teams to 88.1 points and 41.2 percent from the field.

Since a 111-107 loss in Houston on Oct. 31, Portland has held nine straight opponents to fewer than 100 points.

However, not all news is good for the Trail Blazers. Forward Travis Outlaw, who is averaging 9.9 points off the bench, will have surgery Wednesday to fix a stress fracture in his left foot and is out indefinitely.

In Detroit's last visit to Portland, Outlaw hit a fadeaway jumper with 8.9 seconds remaining to help the Blazers snap the Pistons' seven-game winning streak with an 84-83 victory on Jan. 7.

Tayshaun Prince led Detroit with 26 points in that contest, but the veteran forward has missed the last eight games with a ruptured disc in his lower back.

While Prince said he would start some light jogging soon, he watched in street clothes from the bench as the Pistons (5-6) opened their four-game western trip with a 106-93 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

Trailing by as many as 28 points in the third quarter, Detroit pulled within seven with 1:55 remaining before Lakers guard Shannon Brown scored five unanswered points.

"They were the aggressor, and we were reacting to everything they were doing,'' Pistons center Ben Wallace said. "We were a step behind them for the entire game. (Our) second group came in and played the way that we should have been playing all along. They made the game close, so we have to take a cue from our second unit and play hard from the start."

After scoring a season-high 27 points in Sunday's 95-90 loss to Dallas, Will Bynum led Detroit with 24 points and six assists Tuesday. He has scored 20 or more in a career-best three straight games.

First-year Piston Ben Gordon rebounded from a season-worst five-point outing against the Mavericks and scored 18 on Tuesday. Gordon averaged 14.0 points against Portland in 2008-09, while with Chicago.

Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge averaged 26.5 points as Portland swept the season series against Detroit in 2008-09 for the first time in six years.

Detroit hosts Portland on Jan. 23.

Pistons make it close, but Blazers hold on for win

PORTLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- There were good signs for both the Portland Trail Blazers and the Detroit Pistons Wednesday night at the Rose Garden.

Portland (9-4) showed poise and made plays in the clutch to hold off Detroit and claim an 87-81 victory.

The Pistons (5-7) showed fight and rallied from a 70-50 deficit after three quarters to draw within one point and scare the daylights out of the Blazers and a partisan throng of 20,391.

Portland needed a 3-pointer by Steve Blake and six straight free throws by Blake and Andre Miller to stave off Detroit and win its seventh game in the last eight outings.

The Pistons ? playing the second of back-to-back games after a Tuesday loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in Staples Center ? stormed back behind Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villaneuva to make for a frantic final few seconds.

"You play the game 48 minutes," said Portland coach Nate McMillan, pleased to win but unnerved at the too-close-for-comfort finish. "It was a good lesson. You play it the right way and you don't relax, because it's never over."

Portland held a slim lead through most of the first half and went into intermission ahead 48-38.

Behind Brandon Roy's scoring and a defense that limited Detroit to 12 points and 5-for-22 third-quarter shooting, the Blazers took a 20-point lead into the final period.

The margin was still 76-60 with six minutes to go when the Pistons began to whittle away.

A 15-2 run got Detroit to within 78-75 with a minute and a half left. Blake threw the ball away, leading to a Villanueva layup at the other end and a 78-77 difference.

Blake missed a 3-point attempt with 42 seconds left, but rebounded the long miss, spotted up and drained another trey to make it 81-77 with 26 seconds remaining.

"We needed it," McMillan said. "We don't want him to hesitate. He had an open look. He can knock that shot down."

"He stuck with it," Roy said. "Blake's tough. He's a fiery guy. That's what we love about him. He wants to make big plays. You could just sense he had to do something to make up for it. I'm happy he made the three that gave us a cushion."

Stuckey stuck a pair of free throws to close the margin to 81-79, but Miller ? who earlier had missed four straight at the line ? sank four in a row and Blake a pair to put the game on ice.

"We need to do a better job in the third quarter, but our players worked so hard in the fourth quarter, they gave themselves an opportunity," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "We just can't put ourselves in such a big hole."

Miller, an .802 career foul shooter, said he wasn't nervous when he toed the line with 22.6 seconds left and Portland nursing an 81-79 advantage.

"I felt fine," the veteran point guard said. "Just happens like that sometimes. You're uncomfortable, and you miss. That probably happened to me once in my career.

"But it happens, you get over it and move on to the next two free throws. I made the final four."

Portland has won this season on defense ? it ranks first in the NBA in opponents' scoring (87.5) and field-goal percentage (.410) ? and at the foul line, where it leads the league at .821. Those were the keys Wednesday night, too.

"The defense has been great for us," said Roy, who had 20 points, four rebounds and five assists. "We'd have liked to finish this game better in the fourth quarter, but our free throw shooting was good down the stretch. And we did a good job of holding them off."

Detroit competed well despite playing without two injured stars ? Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back) ? a night after losing to the Lakers and Kobe Bryant. The Pistons outrebounded Portland ? one of the league's best on the boards ? 39-36 and were in it to the end despite shooting poorly (.388 from the field, 4 for 15 from 3-point range).

"We played terrible basketball the first three quarters," said Villanueva, who scored 20 points in only 16 foul-plague minutes. "We turned it around in that fourth quarter, but we need to play like that the whole game."

The Blazers, meanwhile, were thankful history didn't repeat itself. Two years ago, they led by 25 points in the third quarter at Philadelphia only to lose 92-88.

"It's much better to learn a lesson in a win than in a loss," Roy said. "I'm just happy we pulled it out, and hopefully this doesn't happen again."
