Clippers-Hornets Preview

The New Orleans Hornets cruised to a road win over the Los Angeles Clippers last week to continue their recent dominance in the series.

Because of a pair of crucial developments in the eight days since that game, the Hornets' winning streak against the Clippers appears to be in serious jeopardy when the clubs meet in New Orleans on Tuesday night.

The Hornets (3-8) have won 10 straight against Los Angeles and 16 of the last 20 home games in the series dating to 1993, when they were based in Charlotte. The Clippers (4-7) have lost their last three trips to New Orleans Arena by an average of 22.7 points.

The Hornets continued their mastery of the Clippers on Nov. 9. Chris Paul had 24 points and 10 assists in just 25 minutes, and Devin Brown scored 25 points as New Orleans won 112-84 at Staples Center.

As convincing as that victory was, a lot has changed for the Hornets over the past week. Paul tweaked his left ankle against the Clippers, then twisted it more severely in a home loss to Portland on Friday. The two-time All-Star point guard is out indefinitely.

The Hornets also have a new coach after the firing of Byron Scott on Thursday. General manager Jeff Bower is 0-2 since taking over.

Those developments appear to give Los Angeles a chance to snap its losing streak in the series. The Clippers might like their chances even more after putting together one of their best all-around games of the season Sunday, beating Oklahoma City 101-93.

Baron Davis scored 24 points and made a key 3-pointer in the final minute, and Chris Kaman had 25 points while going 10 for 15 from the field as the Clippers outscored the Thunder 26-17 in the fourth quarter to snap a three-game overall skid.

"Just any win right now is a big win, being 4-7," said Kaman, who's averaging a career-best 22.3 points but was held to a season-low 14 against New Orleans last week. "I thought we did a good job tonight in the fourth quarter finishing the game."

Davis sees plenty of room for improvement as the Clippers continue a three-game road trip that finishes Wednesday in Memphis.

"We still have to find a way to get into a better rhythm offensively," he said after Los Angeles scored more than 89 points for the first time in four games. "We are too congested sometimes and that is how some teams get back in the game on us. ... Hopefully this road trip will be a learning curve for us and we can take what we learn and apply it to the rest of the season."

The Hornets also have work to do. In their first full game without Paul, they fell 121-98 at Atlanta on Saturday night, their largest margin of defeat during a frustrating start to the season.

"It's different because our game was based on (Paul) creating for everybody, and now we just have to all step it up, move the ball, just kind of play off each other," said Peja Stojakovic, who led the team with 25 points against the Hawks after totaling 29 over his previous six contests.

"I think maybe in the long run it will help us to get our team going, but right now we have to deal with things like that. We have to stay in there and fight."

This will be Rasual Butler's first game in New Orleans since the Hornets traded him to the Clippers in the offseason. Butler averaged a career-high 11.2 points while starting 74 games for New Orleans in 2008-09, his fourth season with the club. He scored 14 points against his former team last week.

Bower, Hornets find recipe for success vs. Clippers

NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- So much has changed for the New Orleans Hornets during the past week since the last time they played the Los Angeles Clippers.

There's no more Byron Scott as coach. There's no Chris Paul on the floor -- at least for the time being.

And most importantly, the results changed as the Hornets toppled the Clippers 110-102 at the New Orleans Arena on Tuesday night. It's the first head-coaching win at any level for Jeff Bower and the Hornets' first win since playing the Clippers on Nov. 9.

Bower looked at the win with three words, "Steps and progress."

Paul made his way into the locker room before the game sporting a walking boot on his left foot and needing the assistance of a crutch on the left side of his body to take as much weight off the sprained left ankle as possible.

It's apparent the Hornets are going to have to find a way to win without him, and Tuesday's output was a nice outline of how to do that.

The Hornets saw some stellar point guard production with the mixture of first-round pick Darren Collison, Devin Brown and Bobby Brown as the three combined for 40 points and 14 assists.

When asked what the feeling was like to get their first win under Bower, Devin Brown responded, "A big grasp of air. We've been through a lot -- losing by 20, by 30 or whatever."

Devin Brown did start at the two guard, but saw plenty of time during the second and third quarters at the point.

"I thought [the point guard play] was really important, especially against the physical nature of [Clippers guard] Baron [Davis]," Bower said. "There were stretches where we used Devin at the point and his aggressiveness for us during the middle part of the game was a big catalyst for us."

Bower said the Hornets worked more on spacing offensively. It seemed to work as it allowed the point guard trio to distribute the ball easier and create offense when they deemed necessary.

Rookie Marcus Thornton was the first off the bench for the Hornets, providing 12 points in 21 minutes, showing Bower is moving toward a youth movement. Thornton was buried on the bench as an inactive during the first five games under Scott.

Add David West's 24 points and 10 rebounds and Emeka Okafor's 14 boards and the Hornets may have found their recipe for winning with or without Paul.

"We were aggressive and playing off of [David] West," Devin Brown said. "When D. West is swinging the ball, we're knocking down shots."

Collison added: "This is definitely a big boost to my confidence, to get that first win under my belt as a starter. I can really thank David West and Devin Brown. They were looking out for me all night, trying to help me out. It makes the process a lot easier and the game slows down."

In an unplanned move during the postgame chat, Paul and the rest of the team presented Bower with the game ball with Paul leading the charge.

"We've been through a lot here these last couple of weeks," Devin Brown said. "We're just trying to show him as a team and as an organization that we're trying to turn this team around. ... It's just step one and we've got a long way to go, but we just wanted to tell him thank you."

Bower said rebounding has been a constant problem all season for the Hornets and he saw an encouraging improvement in that category Tuesday as the Hornets outrebounded the bigger Clippers 51-36.

There was no lack of effort from Al Thornton as the Clippers forward put up a game-high 30 points. Baron Davis added 23 and nine assists while Chris Kaman chipped in with 17.

Los Angeles did receive another blow to the injury front, though.

Clippers guard Kareem Rush had to be helped off the court with a right knee injury in the latter stages of the first quarter. X-rays were negative with Rush also having an MRI on the knee Tuesday night. It will likely just add to an injured squad with No. 1 overall pick Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon still sidelined.
