Pacers-Nets Preview

A winless start to the season hasn't deterred the Indiana Pacers from finding success. The same can't be said for the injury-plagued New Jersey Nets.

The Pacers look for a fifth straight win Tuesday night at the Izod Center as they try to extend the Nets' franchise-worst start to 0-11.

Indiana (4-3) lost its first three games before three straight double-digit victories over losing teams. The Pacers finally proved they could beat a contender with a 113-104 victory over Boston on Saturday.

Danny Granger scored 29 points as Indiana rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit. He had 20 in the first half to keep the Pacers in the game.

"I was looking forward to this game because I love playing the really good teams," Granger said. "I really love those games. This game, we got up for it and we were ready."

With Granger drawing more defensive attention, Dahntay Jones scored 12 of his 25 in the fourth quarter to help Indiana prevail.

Jones has been the key to the win streak, moving into the starting lineup for the start of it Nov. 4, and averaging 18.0 points over the four games. The New Jersey native's career average is 5.3 points, and he's never reached double figures in five games in his home state.

"(Coach) Jim O'Brien kept calling my number, told me to be aggressive,'' Jones said. "We had something that worked one time, and we kept with it. That's what you do, you keep milking plays that are working."

The winless Nets could use a similar spark, but have been forced to use eight or fewer players in four of their last five games. All-Star point guard Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, Jarvis Hayes, Keyon Dooling, Courtney Lee and Tony Battie are all out for New Jersey.

The Nets nearly overcame all those absences Saturday in Miami, where they fell 81-80 on Dwyane Wade's 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left. Brook Lopez tipped in Rafer Alston's missed runner with 4.1 seconds remaining to give New Jersey the lead.

"I feel terrible for our guys," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "We lay it all out there and to get beat like that, I'm just sick to my heart for them. It hurts. I feel so bad because the effort was extraordinary. We just fell short."

Lopez and Trenton Hassell each finished with 17 points for New Jersey, which is shooting 39.4 percent over its last four games.

Indiana ended a four-game road losing streak at New Jersey with a 98-87 win Nov. 12, 2008, in its lone visit last season. T.J. Ford scored 18 points to lead the Pacers as they took advantage of an injured Harris' absence for the Nets.

Ford started the first six games for Indiana before back spasms he suffered in last Wednesday's win over Golden State caused O'Brien to start Earl Watson on Saturday. Watson had 12 points and seven assists.

Pacers walk away with 5th straight win; Nets drop to 0-11

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- Winless hasn't always meant hapless for the Nets early in the 2009-10 campaign.

There have been close games and heartbreaking finishes that indicated New Jersey had something more to offer than eight healthy bodies.

But there was little of that charm in the Pacers' 91-83 win over the Nets on Tuesday night at Izod Center.

With little room for error against one of the league's hotter teams, the Nets saw Indiana start the first and third quarters with 9-0 runs and never recovered, despite strong individual games from Chris Douglas-Roberts (27 points, 12 rebounds) and Brook Lopez (26 points, 16 rebounds).

The Nets are now 0-11, the first team to start the season as such since the Memphis Grizzlies did it in 2002.

The Pacers, led by Danny Granger's 22 points and Roy Hibbert's 19 points and 10 rebounds, have now won five in a row for the first time since the 2004-05 season and are two games over .500 for the first time since Dec. 22, 2007.

Bright spots for New Jersey? Douglas-Roberts wasn't looking for them.

"We regress," the second-year wingman said. "We do a lot of things that are successful and we tend to go back to the things that aren't successful.

"We've been preaching coming out with energy the whole year. But for whatever reason, sometimes we don't do it. We gave a team that is very confident right now and playing very well, a spot. Two 9-0 runs in the first quarter and third quarter. We just can't do that."

Nets coach Lawrence Frank was slightly more diplomatic.

"Not to take anything away from Indiana, but we do not have the margin for error not to be ready to go right from the beginning," Frank said. "You look at the first nine minutes, just defensively, just how easy it was for them -- we don't have that luxury. We don't have enough offensive firepower to overcome those type of quarters."

The Nets may have started out with a small lineup, featuring 6-foot-5 Trenton Hassell at power forward to match up with Indiana's undersized starters. But it was the Pacers coming up big at the outset with a 9-0 run to start a game that advanced to a 28-12 lead.

New Jersey was playing catch-up the entire first half, cutting its deficit to six and trailing 54-48 at intermission.

The Pacers, who were without Troy Murphy (bruised back) for a fifth straight game, were determined not to take the winless Nets lightly.

"The Nets have completed against every opponent," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "It's not because of a lack of effort."

Indiana opened up the third quarter with a 7-0 spurt to take a 15-point lead, forcing the Nets to re-start their climb. The Nets' defense tightened up for its best stretch of the game and Douglas-Roberts fueled the offense with seven points in a 14-4 run, cutting the Pacers' lead to 65-60.

But Indiana bridged a 10-3 run between the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to bring it back to a 75-63 advantage. The Nets were 1-for-9 from the field to start the final frame and trailed 83-73 after a pair of Granger free throws with 3:49 left in the game.

"We're doing a good job committing on defense," said Pacers forward Dahntay Jones, who had 17 points. "If we stick to our scripts, we'll be all right."

Morale for the Nets was a bit skewed entering the game. Sure, they were winless in their first 10 games, including a crushing 81-80 loss in Miami on Saturday night that saw Dwyane Wade clinch it on a last-second 3-pointer. But Frank had been undeniably pleased with his team's effort given its lack of healthy personnel.

And on top of that, the Nets' marketing department actually marketed the 0-10 start as "10 is Enough!" night -- extending two free tickets to season-ticket holders to bring additional fans to the game.

But apparently 10 wasn't really enough.

"You play a lot of games," Douglas-Roberts added. "You're going to lose by one point. You're going to lose by buzzer-beaters. If you dwell on that, you're going to keep losing and be losers."

The Nets hope to be fielding a fuller team soon. They had eight players again, with Eduardo Najera joining the walking wounded with a sore back. But starting guards Devin Harris and Courtney Lee (both out with strained groins) continue to do more and practice and it's conceivable at least one of them could be back for Saturday's grudge match against also-struggling New York.
