Rockets-Kings Preview

A .500 record after eight games wouldn't normally be something to get overly excited about. Considering where the Sacramento Kings finished last season, their enthusiasm can be understood.

The Kings seek their first four-game winning streak in more than 18 months Friday night when they host the Houston Rockets.

Expectations are relatively low for Sacramento (4-4) after it finished a franchise-worst 17-65 last season, prompting the hiring of coach Paul Westphal on June 10.

Any hopes the Kings had at sneaking up on teams seemed to be dashed when leading scorer Kevin Martin was lost for two months to wrist surgery. Although Martin averaged 30.6 points in five games before his injury, Sacramento went 1-4 during that span and their future appeared bleak with their best player on the shelf for an extended period.

With contributions from rookies and veterans, the Kings have won three straight to reach .500 for the first time since Dec. 4, 2006. Sacramento, which hasn't won four in a row since March 30-April 5, 2008, has had three straight losing seasons after eight consecutive playoff appearances.

"We want to start getting respect around here and the only way to do that is on the court,'' said forward Jason Thompson, a second-year player who is one of six Kings with one year or less experience.

Thompson had 21 points and 14 rebounds while rookie Tyreke Evans continued his impressive play with 20 points, eight boards and eight assists in Tuesday's 101-98 victory over visiting Oklahoma City.

Sacramento made 31 of 36 free throws, hitting all 14 attempts in the third quarter.

"It was a great thing, the way we closed out the game was right,'' said Andres Nocioni, who matched a season high with 16 points. "Our young guys are doing a great job. They are bringing energy and playing great defense. They have given us new blood on this team.''

One of those young players is Evans, the fourth overall pick in this year's draft. In his last three games, Evans has averaged 25.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists.

"I am feeling good out there," said Evans. "I have a good bounce to my game. I feel comfortable attacking the basketball."

Houston (5-3) should provide another challenge for the improving Kings. The Rockets have won five of seven since a season-opening loss, and are coming off a dominant second-half performance Wednesday in a 104-79 win over lowly Memphis.

A five-point halftime lead didn't sit well with coach Rick Adelman, who tore into his team for their sluggish play. The Rockets responded by outscoring the Grizzlies 31-19 in the third quarter.

"At halftime, we talked about the fact that we didn't come out with the energy we needed to,'' Adelman said. "The first half, we didn't come out with a spark. The third quarter, we really turned it on.''

Luis Scola had 22 points and 15 rebounds and Carl Landry scored 20 for Houston, which matched a season high with 30 assists and finished with 27 fast-break points.

Despite missing injured stars Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming, the Rockets have scored 100 points or more in seven straight games, the club's longest such streak since a 12-game run during the 1995-96 season.

A big reason for that success is Landry, who is averaging 15.6 points per game - more than six points above last season's total. He has scored in double figures in a career-best seven consecutive games.

The Rockets won all three meetings against the Kings in 2008-09 by an average of 13.3 points.

Young duo steps up in Kings fourth-straight win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Geoff Petrie sauntered the empty sideline in Sacramento minutes after Friday night's game against Houston. With his hands in his pockets, moving leisurely alongside the empty court, the stoic Kings' President of Basketball Operations couldn't help but crack a smile.

His vision was quickly becoming a reality.

A glimpse of that vision was captured in the final seconds of Sacramento's 109-100 victory against Houston, when the young duo of Tyreke Evans and Jason Thompson provided a highlight Sacramento hopes is emblematic of future triumph.

The image was that of the rookie point guard Evans sprinting towards the basket, delivering an alley-oop pass across the key to the flying second-year big man. Thompson finished the play emphatically, sending the home crowd into a roar.

"It's starting to get kind of loud in that building," Kings Coach Paul Westphal said.

And why wouldn't it be? The Kings have now won four consecutive games and the team is over the .500-mark for the first time since 2006. The team's winning streak is the second longest in the NBA.

For the young Sacramento tandem of Evans and Thompson, it's been a quick learning curve.

Thompson is averaging a double-double this season and the first-round pick Evans has scored 20 points in three of the four games of the win streak.

For Thompson, the success isn't premature.

"It's exciting and we know that our guys are young," Thompson said. "We have to make progress sometime, it might as well be earlier than later."

Thompson's quick progress resulted in a career-high 27 points on 9-for-15 shooting.

"You get chills when you hear how loud it can get," Thompson said of the fans' reaction to the play and the victory.

Thompson recorded his fifth consecutive double-double. Last season, Thompson averaged 11.1 points per game and 7.4 rebounds.

"I set goals for last year and I set goals for this year," Thompson said. "I am just going to keep with it. The stuff that I am doing is working."

The 6-foot-11 forward from Rider grabbed nine of his 11 rebounds on the offensive glass. The Kings as a team outrebounded the physical Rockets 54-35 in the contest.

"He's a remarkable young player," Westphal said of Thompson. "He is learning how to stay in the game and have a big impact in the game in a lot of ways."

A sign of how well things are going for Evans came in the final minutes when the Memphis product stumbled, then connected on a deep 3-pointer, striking hard off the glass as the shot clock expired.

"It is my dream, growing up and being a kid, you see the clock winding down and you want to be the one to take the shot and make the crowd go crazy," Evans said.

"I had my chance tonight and let it fly and it went in."

Evans scored 20 points and had four assists and six rebounds. He hit back-to-back baskets in the final moments of the game to cement Sacramento's victory.

"I'm just playing," Evans said. "In the first couple of games I was thinking too much. Since I was the No. 4 pick, I was under a lot of pressure, and I was not getting out there and playing.

"I went out there and did that tonight and now I feel comfortable."

Evans is the first Kings rookie to score 20 or more points in four consecutive games since Lionel Simmons did it in 1991.

"Tyreke doesn't recognize too many limitations," Westphal said. "He really wants to be a part of making big plays in the fourth quarter. He's a fearless competitor.

"Players who have that something extra in them tend to make plays like that more than someone who backs off of a challenge."

Trailing 63-52 in the first half, the Rockets opened the third quarter with a 19-7 run to take the lead at 71-70 lead midway through the quarter. The Kings went back on top on the very next possession on Andres Nocioni's three-point play. Sacramento never looked back.

Injuries have left both teams without their respective stars -- Houston missing Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming and Sacramento sans leading-scorer Kevin Martin. Yet both teams are playing above expectations with the young teams.

Houston coach Rick Adelman said before Friday night's contest that the Rockets' role players and young guys were shouldering responsibilities they'd never taken on before.

For both Houston and Sacramento, role players have played above expectations.

One in particular is Trevor Ariza, who won't be labeled a role player much longer.

The sixth-year player, in his first season with the Rockets, has become Houston's go-to scorer. He finished with a game-high 28 points and tallied six rebounds and five assists.

A big change for Ariza who entered this season with a career scoring average of 6.9 points per game playing for New York, Orlando and most recently for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The athletic guard continues to slice through defenses and knock down 3-pointers to lead the Rockets. Perched atop the arc, he drilled three 3-pointers in the first quarter against Sacramento. He'd cool off dramatically though, finishing 4-for-12 from 3-point territory on the night.
