The Portland Trail Blazers are taking advantage of matchups against the bottom teams of the Western Conference. A second meeting in four nights with the Minnesota Timberwolves could extend their winning streak to four games.

The Trail Blazers look to continue their dominance of the Timberwolves on Wednesday night when they visit the Target Center.

Portland (5-3) has won three straight games - including a 93-79 victory Tuesday at Memphis to open a five-game road trip - after dropping three of its first five. Tuesday's win was the Blazers' second consecutive against the teams tied for last in the West. They beat Minnesota 116-93 at home Sunday.

That victory was the Trail Blazers' ninth in a row over the Timberwolves (1-7) and 13th in the last 15 meetings. They haven't lost to Minnesota since a 94-93 road defeat on March 25, 2007, and have taken all four matchups at Target Center since then.

Brandon Roy would surely like to improve on his performance from Sunday's win, in which he dished out seven assists but was held to two points on 1-for-6 shooting. The swingman fared better Tuesday, finishing with 20 points and seven assists while shooting 6 of 11 from the floor.

The two-time All-Star leads Portland with averages of 21.6 points and 5.1 assists after posting a career-high 22.6 scoring average last season.

Despite his subpar performance against Minnesota on Sunday, Roy is averaging 22.0 points and 6.6 assists during the Trail Blazers' nine-game winning streak in the series.

The Timberwolves got off to a positive start to 2009-10, beating New Jersey 95-93 on Oct. 28, but have since lost seven in a row. They appeared to have a good chance to end the slide Monday at Golden State - another club that entered with one win - but fell 146-105. The loss matched Minnesota franchise records for largest margin of defeat, set against Miami on March 5, 1996, and for most points allowed, against the Warriors on April 1, 1994.

The Timberwolves are now looking to end their longest slide since dropping 10 in a row Feb. 20-March 9, a skid that was still three losses shy of their worst during a miserable 24-58 season.

"We've maintained from the beginning this is going to be a process, this is not something that's going to turn around in the first 10 games of the regular season," first-year coach Kurt Rambis said after watching his team commit a season-high 28 turnovers against the Warriors. "We knew we were going to take some lumps.

"Until we have an idea of a nice starting unit and a set rotation where guys can feel comfortable and when they're going to play, we're probably going to continue to play up and down and be inconsistent."

Despite the club's struggles, rookie Jonny Flynn is off to a solid start after being selected sixth overall out of Syracuse in the draft.

The guard matched his career high with 20 points while adding six assists Monday, but also led Minnesota with six turnovers. He's second on the team with 15.0 points per game, and is averaging a club-high 3.5 assists.

The Blazers limited Flynn to 11 points on Sunday.

Oden breaks out in Blazers win over Wolves

MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- With every game, maybe with every possession, Greg Oden becomes a little more relaxed, a little more comfortable with his standing in the NBA. And never was that gradual ascendance more evident than during a second-quarter fast break Wednesday night, when Oden tore up the floor like a latter-day Magic Johnson and slammed home the most memorable basket in Portland's lopsided 107-84 victory over Minnesota.

The Blazers' young center dribbled full-speed up the floor, looked one way and passed the other, then caught a return pass as he reached the basket and jammed it home to an audible "whoa... " from the Target Center crowd. Wow, nothing to this game, is there, Greg?

"I was so nervous," Oden said after a long laugh when reminded of the play. "I'm not used to that."

You'd never know. Oden, in fact, is finally getting used to lots of things in the NBA, and is arriving where he's been projected since the day he was drafted in 2007: At the heart of one of the most exciting teams in the NBA. He proved it again Wednesday by making eight of his 10 shots, notching his second double-double of the season by scoring a team-high 18 points with 11 rebounds, and leading Portland to its fourth straight win.

"I knew that it would take some time for Greg to be in that lineup, to be the center we drafted him to be," said Portland coach Nate McMillan. "Now he's there. He's not injured. We're involving him and figuring out how to play with him. He's hitting the potential we knew he had when we drafted him."

The same could be said for the Blazers as a whole, at least in the season's first three weeks. Portland's victory, all but locked up with 67 points in the second and third quarters, was the Blazers' 10th in a row over the Timberwolves. More importantly, it was their third road win in four games, and gave Portland -- now 6-3 with three stops left on this five-game road trip -- its best start to the season in a decade, since an 8-1 spurt in 1999.

"We're still working on who we want to become. We're building to be one of the best teams," McMillan said. "We're starting to understand what we need to do out there. We had 30 assists tonight -- we've got some guys who can put the ball in the hole when we share the ball like that."

That's a stark contrast to the Timberwolves, who lost their eighth consecutive game and fourth in a row by 15 points or more. While Portland earned assists on 30 of their 42 baskets, Minnesota managed just 16 assists on 34 hoops. Four Blazers piled up four or more assists, led by Andre Miller's 10; only Ramon Sessions, with five, had more than three assists for Minnesota.

"We're having trouble finding ways to score," said Kurt Rambis, now 1-8 as Minnesota's coach. "We look lost a lot of the time."

The Wolves shared the ball well in a tight first quarter, when all five starters scored at least three points. But Minnesota's cohesiveness evaporated from that point on, and the Blazers took control with a 29-12 run. Jonny Flynn led the Timberwolves with 15 points, but Minnesota hit just 44 percent of its shots and got outrebounded by Portland, 47-34. No wonder the Blazers held Minnesota below 100 points for the 12th consecutive meeting.

Meanwhile, Portland shredded the Wolves' gambling defense, making Minnesota pay for its occasional double-teams of Oden or guard Brandon Roy, who scored 14 points. Those two players combined to make 15 of their 21 shots, a big reason why the Blazers shot a season-high 55.3 percent from the field.

"Any time you have a player that two (defenders) have to commit to, it puts pressure on the defense. It becomes all about spacing and those guys making decisions with the ball," McMillan said. "Greg is slowly becoming that type of player, (and) Brandon has been that type of player for us. It becomes pretty easy basketball when you have those type of guys."

Particularly if the seven-footers can run the floor the way Oden displayed Wednesday. When Miller deflected a Flynn pass into Oden's hands at the three-point circle, the Blazers' center spun and raced up the floor, dribbling like a supersized point guard.

"His handle is better than most people think," McMillan said. "He had the break, he got wide, he looked off a defender, and he made the good pass so he could get it back."

"I didn't have time to think," said Oden, who swung the ball to LaMarcus Aldridge as he ran, then slammed home the return pass. "It was a good play on (Aldridge's) part, an unselfish play."

And the head fake in the other direction? "You saw me looking around -- I was looking for someone to pass to," Oden admitted.

Wait, so it wasn't a brilliant bluff to confuse the defense?

Oden laughed again. "I wish I was that talented," he said.

Oh well. As Minnesota can attest, he's plenty talented enough.
