Suns-Wizards Preview

The fast-paced Phoenix Suns haven't had any problems putting up points this season, and Jason Richardson's impressive offensive effort helped them knock off an Eastern Conference power in their most recent game.

The Washington Wizards certainly didn't have any answers for Richardson the last time they saw the Suns.

Richardson looks to build on his highest-scoring game since he last faced the Wizards as Phoenix continues a five-game road trip Sunday afternoon looking for a fifth straight win at the Verizon Center.

Richardson was suspended for the Suns' first two games following his offseason conviction on drunken driving charges, but he came back to average 18.5 points in the next two contests as part of their 4-0 start.

Richardson, though, was held scoreless for the third time in his career Wednesday as Phoenix (5-1) was blown out 122-100 at Orlando in the team's lowest-scoring game of the season.

It didn't take long for Richardson and the Suns to bounce back. The two-time Slam Dunk champion finished with 34 points and 10 rebounds Friday in Boston as Phoenix handed the Celtics their first loss, 110-103.

"They could see after the first (quarter) that I had the stroke going," said Richardson, who was 6 of 7 from 3-point range. "In this offense, every night it's going to be someone different. It was a feel tonight, like everything you throw up is going to go in. I wanted to come out, be aggressive and take it from there."

Richardson became the fifth different leading scorer this season for the Suns, whose road trip ends Monday in Philadelphia. Steve Nash (19.0 points per game) is the only one to be their high scorer in two games, but on Friday, Richardson's hot hand helped Nash finish with 12 assists.

"He's such a good player," Nash said of Richardson. "We'd like to give him every chance to be successful."

The Wizards (2-4) are very aware of Richardson's ability to take over a game. He scored a 2008-09 season-high 35 points in a 128-96 home win over Washington on March 21.

Richardson was held to nine points when the Suns visited the Wizards on Jan. 26, but Phoenix won 103-87 for its fourth straight victory in the nation's capital. Nash has averaged 18.0 points and 16.0 assists in those meetings.

The Suns have won five in a row overall against Washington since Gilbert Arenas scored 54 points in a wild 144-139 overtime win at Phoenix on Dec. 22, 2006, but Arenas has missed the last four meetings due to injury.

Arenas is healthy this season, but the Wizards are still finding their way without the injured Antawn Jamison. After winning two of their first three games, they've dropped three in a row, the latest a 102-86 loss Friday at Indiana.

"I'm very disappointed," coach Flip Saunders said after his team committed a season-high 19 turnovers. "Our effort was poor. We turned the ball over way too much. I told the guys I'm going to have to take responsibility."

Washington is shooting 38.7 percent during its three-game skid.

Arenas and Caron Butler are averaging a combined 42.0 points during that stretch, but Andray Blatche has been limited to 6.0 per game and was held to one point Friday. The fifth-year forward averaged 21.0 points in his first three games - including a career-high 30 in a win over New Jersey on Oct. 31.

Suns continue red-hot start with win over Wizards

WASHINGTON, DC (NBA.com exclusive) -- One day after The House of Representatives passed an historic vote on health care reform, Phoenix guard Steve Nash showed up in Washington to show that he can still pass with the best of them.

Nash, the NBA leader in assists, handed out 17 assists -- two more than the entire Washington roster -- to lead Phoenix (6-1) to a 102-90 victory. The Suns finished with 30 assists, twice as many as the Wizards (2-5).

The Suns are 6-1 now, marking their best start since they began the 2000-01 season with an identical record. More important to the Suns, though, is that they are 3-1 on an Eastern Conference road trip that ends tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Nash, who added 11 points, said the Suns are keeping their hot start to the season in perspective.

"This is the type of team that has got to remain humble and play and be an underdog throughout the season," Nash said. "Whenever you start to say we are a certain caliber of team I think that's where you start to get into trouble. We have to look at it like we're a project and we want to continue to get better through the season."

Meanwhile, the Wizards -- who are still without Antawn Jamison and Mike Miller -- continue to struggle at the offensive end. They have now lost four games in a row by an average of 11 points. In those four games the Wizards have not scored more than 90 points.

"The ball was sticking too much at times," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "Guys are seeing guys struggling and somebody comes in and tries to do it on their own sometimes, and try to do a little bit too much instead of trusting other teammates."

Seeing Phoenix didn't help Washington's woes, either. The Suns have won seven of the last eight against the Wizards, and have swept them the last two seasons. The last time the Wizards beat the Suns was on Dec. 22, 2006, when they needed 54 points from Gilbert Arenas to grab a 144-139 overtime win.

That Washington victory also ended what was then the Suns' franchise-best 15-game winning streak. However, since then Arenas has undergone three surgeries on his left knee and is still trying to get the Wizards on track.

Arenas looked like he might be able to accomplish this by himself early on as he scored 12 of his 20 points in the first quarter and the Wizards took a 29-26 lead.

But the Suns, the top offensive team in the league, made 57.9 percent of their shots in the second quarter to lead 56-51 at halftime. The Suns led by 10 points late in the third quarter, and took their largest lead of the game at 89-75 in the fourth quarter on Channing Frye's 3-pointer with 8:58 remaining. Washington trimmed the lead to 89-83 on an Andray Blatche (20 points) layup with 6:11 to play, but would get no closer.

The Wizards didn't help their cause in the fourth quarter when they were just 5-of-19 from the field. They were proud, however, that they kept Phoneix from hitting its league-leading average in points (111.0).

"If you look, this is a team that averages [111] points," Wizards center Brendan Haywood said. "We held them to 102. I was happy with where we were. Defensively, I thought, down the stretch we had a couple of mishaps on rotations that led to easy shots. We gave up a bunch of offensive rebounds too."

Nash was one of four Suns to finish with a double-double. Frye notched 18 points and 10 rebounds, Amar'e Stoudemire finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Grant Hill added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
