After leading New Orleans to consecutive playoff berths, Chris Paul has been disappointed with the Hornets' sluggish start to 2009-10. Even after winning a difficult game last time out, he knows the team still has plenty of work to do.

Paul and the Hornets look for further improvements on the defensive end Friday night when they host the Toronto Raptors.

New Orleans (2-3) won the Southwest Division two years ago and finished with 49 wins last season to earn the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs, but it opened the new campaign with three losses in its first four games.

Prior to Wednesday's game against Dallas, coach Byron Scott criticized his players for their poor start. The team responded with a 114-107 overtime victory.

Peja Stojakovic hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation and Paul scored six of his 39 points in the extra session for New Orleans, which improved to 2-0 at home.

Perhaps later this season, the Hornets will look back on Scott's rant as a turning point, but Paul realizes they were fortunate not to have fallen to 1-4.

The Mavericks missed three free throws in the final 10 seconds setting up the dramatic 3 by Stojakovic for his only points of the night.

"Just because we win one game doesn't mean everything's solved,'' said Paul, who is averaging 30.0 points on 64.3 percent shooting. "The funny thing is, if they make a couple of those free throws and we lose this game, all the questions are: What's still wrong?''

To eliminate those kinds of questions, New Orleans needs to improve its defense and rebounding.

The Hornets were fifth in the league in scoring defense in 2008-09 at 94.3 points but are allowing an average of 105.2 this season. They're also struggling to control the glass despite having newcomer Emeka Okafor and David West inside, surrendering an average of 12.0 offensive rebounds, ninth-worst in the league.

"We are starting to understand what we need to do defensively and we just have to continue to work on it tomorrow and the next day and the next day and get it in embedded into our heads," Scott said.

Trying to shore up any defensive miscues won't be easy against Toronto. The Raptors (2-2) are third in the league in scoring (108.5) and boast one of the NBA's best rebounders in Chris Bosh.

In Wednesday's 110-99 win over Detroit, Bosh had 25 points and eight rebounds, falling two shy of his fourth double-double in four games.

Andrea Bargnani picked up the slack on the boards, finishing a career-high 12 rebounds to go with 22 points for his first double-double of the season.

"We want more of that,'' said Bosh, who is averaging 29.5 points and 13.0 rebounds. "He did a really good job on the boards tonight. That shows that if he really asserts himself on the boards, he can be a factor for us in rebounding. We need that, we need all the rebounds we can get.''

Bargnani, off to a fast start by averaging a career-high 22.0 points per game, finished with a total of 23 and five rebounds in two games against the Hornets in 2008-09, both losses.

This contest starts a difficult stretch for the Raptors, who play seven of their next eight on the road.

Third-quarter barrage propels Raptors past Hornets

NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The one thing the Toronto Raptors have done, and done well, through their first four games this season has been scoring points.

The one thing coach Byron Scott has been chewing out the New Orleans Hornets for through their first five games has been the team's lack of defensive prowess.

Both sides followed their early season trends as the Raptors used a dominating third quarter to drill the Hornets 107-90 on Friday night in the New Orleans Arena.

The Raptors went on a polarizing 27-4 run during about an eight-minute span to go up 78-60 with 2:28 in the third quarter. Toronto wound up pummeling New Orleans in the third quarter as the Raptors outscored the Hornets 34-14. The game was essentially over after that.

When asked if it didn't hurt to go on such a huge run, a laughing Hedo Turkoglu said, "No, not at all. It was great."

Toronto's stretch was so impressive that it broke a team record for most 3-pointers made in a quarter as the Raptors drained eight in the third quarter.

"I thought they had a plan coming out of halftime," said the Hornets' David West. "I thought they knew what they wanted to do. Go to (Chris) Bosh and let him work. At the same time, they really moved the ball around to the other guys and made shots."

The Raptors frontcourt possess ample bulk and potential firepower with Bosh, Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani, and their game plan is to make you adjust to them.

The Hornets tried at times to send out bigger lineups to combat the Raptors' size. They tried putting West, Emeka Okafor and Darius Songaila on Bosh throughout the game. None of them fazed Bosh or anyone else on the Raptors' front line.

Bosh played about as perfect as you can possibly get with his game-high 27 points. He went 9-for-9 from the floor and yet he still shook his head in disappointment about the three free throws he missed in his 11 attempts. Bosh even kept his perfect 3-point percentage in tact by sinking one more Friday night. His unblemished average leads the NBA.

"We knew they were coming," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "We made sure we got guys into the right spots. ...Teams are either going to play [Bosh] straight up or they're going to come to a certain spot. He did a nice job of getting the ball out of there and sharing and getting his teammates involved. Nine field goals made, he could have taken a lot more."

With Bargnani, though, he can step outside and hit the 3-pointer. When Okafor was guarding Bargnani, the Hornets center would often follow Bargnani. As the game progressed, the Hornets left Bargnani alone and and he hit three 3-pointers in the rout that was the third quarter.

"When we're making shots, and we weren't in the first half, but when Bargnani makes shots, he's a tough guy to guard because you have to have a big go out on the perimeter," Triano said. "And then Turkoglu makes so many plays. He makes so many plays to get everybody the basketball."

Bargnani chipped in with 14 while Turkoglu scored 16 points. The Raptors also saw improved play from Jose Calderon as he added 16 points and eight assists.

The last time the Hornets started the season 2-4 was during the 2005-2006 season when the Hornets were relocated to Oklahoma City and didn't make the playoffs.

Chris Paul only dished out four assists in regulation in an overtime win against Dallas on Wednesday as he created most of the offense himself by racking up 39 points. He played more like the Paul most are accustomed to Friday as he scored 21 points and served out 18 assists.

"Our focus tonight was on Chris Paul," Triano said. " Anytime he gave it up for the most part our guys had a hand in his face. I think we also rebounded well and (Paul) didn't get many second chances."

Yet in a recurring theme, the Hornets supporting cast wasn't all that helpful. It only compounds New Orleans' early season issues. West was the only other starter in double figures with 14 points. Bobby Brown came off the bench to score 16 points.

Scott figured the game was so out of hand that he inserted 2009 first-round pick Darren Collison and second-round pick Marcus Thornton into the lineup during garbage time.
