A foot injury has prevented leading scorer Gerald Wallace from ending one of the Charlotte Bobcats' worst stretches of the season.
Joe Johnson, the Atlanta Hawks' top scoring threat, is perfectly healthy, but he's also had trouble trying to stop their slump.
The Hawks and Bobcats will try to end their respective losing streaks as they meet on Wednesday night in the teams' final game before the All-Star break.
Atlanta (21-27) is in danger of matching a season-high fourth straight loss, set from Jan. 16-23. The Hawks also have not fared well at Philips Arena recently, losing four straight and 10 of 11.
Atlanta is averaging 89.5 points in its last two games, and Johnson has struggled. The All-Star guard has scored a total of 19 points while shooting 24.0 percent (6-for-25) from the field in that span.
Johnson, who averages 20.6 points, was held to just 11 in a 94-90 loss to Detroit on Tuesday night and he won't have Josh Childress to help him Wednesday. Childress, fourth on the Hawks with an average of 12.2 points per game, hurt his knee against the Pistons and will be out for at least this game.
Against Charlotte (18-34) this season, however, Johnson is averaging 32.5 points and 8.0 assists while shooting 54.8 percent (23-for-42) from the field to lead Atlanta to two wins.
Wallace, meanwhile, averaged 25.5 points in those games, but the star guard will sit out Wednesday for the fifth time in six games with a strained foot as the Bobcats try to avoid their season-high eighth straight loss.
"It makes no sense for us to rush Gerald," first-year Charlotte coach Sam Vincent said.
After rookie Jared Dudley started for Wallace in a loss to Detroit on Sunday, Vincent decided to go with Raymond Felton against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday. Felton had a game-high 29 points and added eight assists, but Charlotte lost 106-97.
"Just getting back to my old self, attacking the basket and trying to get guys involved at the same time," said Felton, who was two points short of matching his career high.
Charlotte's Jason Richardson, averaging 20.2 points, was held to 10, and is expected to play Wednesday despite a sprained left ankle. It's uncertain when he was injured.
After struggling to guard the Lakers' newly acquired center Pau Gasol, who had 26 points and two blocks, the Bobcats must find a way to stop Hawks forward Josh Smith.
Smith had a game-high 30 points and added six rebounds and three blocks versus the Pistons. This season, Smith is averaging a career-high 17.8 points with 8.0 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game.
"I wanted to drive the ball as much as possible and I was able to make moves on the post," said Smith, who bounced back from a seven-point effort in a loss to Houston on Saturday night. "Coach (Mike Woodson) kept rewarding me down there for scoring and making good decisions."
Smith has totaled 34 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks in two games versus Charlotte this season.
