The Orlando Magic took advantage of the frustrations of one young, struggling team to snap their longest losing streak of the season.
They look to do the same on Saturday to Memphis Grizzlies, who have dropped six straight.
Orlando (17-7) snapped its three-game losing streak Friday with a 103-87 win over the Charlotte Bobcats. The Magic had a slow start, but used a 30-13 third quarter to regroup and improved to 12-3 on the road.
"You can't play lethargic in this league and expect to win," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We've been doing that a lot lately."
Jameer Nelson, who finished with 13 points, said Van Gundy called out the team when Charlotte built a 13-point lead early in the third quarter. Orlando responded with a 34-9 run over the next 13 minutes, eventually sending the Bobcats to their 13th loss of the year.
"He questioned our toughness, which he should have done," Nelson said of Van Gundy.
During the Magic's losing streak, they were held below 90 points twice and shot a combined 39.0 percent from the field. The Magic, who are averaging 103.1 points, shot 53.6 percent - their third-highest total of the season.
Dwight Howard had 33 points and 18 rebounds for his league-leading 20th double-double to pace five players in double figures, but also could have scored more had he not struggled from the foul line.
"I don't know what was going on tonight," said Howard, who was 11-for-16 from the field but missed 9 of 20 free throws. "I was shooting them hard, shooting them soft. But the main thing was, at the end of the game I tried to make my free throws as best as I could."
Howard has notched five consecutive double-doubles, averaging 23.0 points and 17.4 rebounds in that span.
Memphis (6-16) is trying to regroup from a 98-91 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. The Grizzlies went without a field goal for a franchise-record 10:38 during the second half, managing only nine free throws during that span.
They also committed 25 turnovers, leading to 23 points for the Clippers.
"Obviously, a sloppy game," Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni said. "We were just trying to do too much, whether you call it careless or forcing it in there. We are playing in clumps. We are throwing some really strange passes."
Mike Miller scored 23 points and Hakim Warrick added 20 for Memphis, which is enduring its longest losing streak since a seven-game skid from Nov. 4-18, 2006. Yet only one loss during the current streak has been by more than 10 points.
"There are a lot of inconsistencies," Warrick said. "That's why we have the losses. We have to be more consistent."
The Grizzlies have won eight of the last 10 between the teams, but lost eight of their last 11 in Orlando.
