San Antonio 104, Miami 87
MIAMI, Oct. 23 (AP) -- Manu Ginobili scored 22 points on 6-for-7 shooting, and the San Antonio Spurs sealed a forgettable exhibition season for the Miami Heat with a 104-87 victory Tuesday night.
The Heat (0-7) were winless in the preseason for the first time in the team's 20-year history.
Michael Finley scored 14 points, Matt Bonner had 13 and Tim Duncan finished with 11 rebounds for the Spurs (3-1), who won a meaningless matchup of the past two NBA champions.
Heat center Shaquille O'Neal scored 17 points and didn't play after halftime. Rookie guard Daequan Cook finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Miami, which is off until its regular-season opener at home Nov. 1 against Detroit.
O'Neal, who has been slowed by a bruised left thigh, had 14 points in the first 8 1/2 minutes. Chris Quinn scored 11 points, Alonzo Mourning had 10 on 5-for-5 shooting and Penny Hardaway added 10 for the Heat.
Dorell Wright, trying to win a starting spot, went 0-for-7 in 27 minutes for Miami.
The Spurs went 11-for-24 from 3-point range, outrebounded Miami 40-29 and outscored the Heat 29-11 at the foul line.
Preseason records are hardly an accurate barometer of how the season will go. Cleveland was 1-6 last year before reaching the NBA finals, and the Spurs were 2-7 in the exhibition campaign two seasons ago and wound up winning 63 regular-season games.
Miami can only hope it finds a way to forget its dismal October.
O'Neal was a bright spot, using jump hooks, putbacks and dunks to control the game early. With him on the floor, Miami took a 23-18 lead. Once O'Neal went to the bench, San Antonio immediately used a 20-8 run to take the lead, and the Spurs kept the cushion the rest of the way.
Cook had a three-point play to draw Miami within 74-68 with 2 minutes left in the third, but it was all San Antonio from there. Ginobili hit a 3-pointer to immediately restore a nine-point lead, and the Spurs pulled away to go up by 20 midway through the fourth.
Miami point guard Jason Williams was ejected with 2:45 left in the second quarter after getting two technicals for arguing a foul call.
Notes: Antoine Walker did not play for the second straight preseason game. "I know what he can do,'' Heat coach Pat Riley said. Miami G Smush Parker was also held out. ... Robert Horry (personal business) was out again for San Antonio, which still has two exhibitions left. ... F Bruce Bowen, who'd logged only 25 preseason minutes entering Tuesday, started and played 18 minutes.
