Rockets-Blazers: Play |
After Telfair, who scored 13 points, converted his jumper from the baseline, the Rockets had a pair of chances for the win. However, rookie Luther Head missed a 3-pointer and Yao Ming was off on a short shot in the lane as time expired.
"It was a play for me to come off the screen and try to get to the other side of the basket," said Telfair, who made 6-of-9 shots. "I penetrated through and I was wide open. It's nice to get the win because there was talk about the longest losing streak in team history (13). I didn't want to be a part of that."
"I came off a screen, tried to get it to Yao but they were fronting the post, so I took the shot and missed," Head said. "I felt I took a shot I could make. I thought Yao was going to be able to put the rebound back in but it just didn't happen that way."
The Trail Blazers also stopped a nine-game losing streak against the Rockets by holding them to 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Keith Bogans scored 20 points and Head and Yao 13 apiece for Houston (32-43), which has all but been eliminated from playoff contention.
"They played well tonight and their guys competed harder on defense than we did on offense," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Our ball handling was poor, conversion rate was poor, running the post. Our last possesion was a lack of execution. They were better than us."
Portland used an 8-4 run to start the second half and took a 51-41 lead on a Juan Dixon's jumper at the 8:31 mark. Houston answered with a 16-4 spurt to take back the lead.
