"I said he would be a great player," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "I think he might be that already. Nights like this prove he is going to be a superstar in this league."
Paul's alley-oop pass to Kirk Snyder gave New Orleans a 110-109 lead with 41 second left in the extra session.
"Only aggressors get wins at this part of the season," said Paul, who made 6-of-15 shots. "Staying aggressive on both ends of the floor is what pushed us to win."
"For a 20-year-old, he really understands the magnitude of these games," Scott said. "We just needed other guys to step up, and we did that with seven guys in double figures."
Derek Fisher, who scored 22 points, tried to answered with a layup but Aaron Williams blocked his attempt 13 second later. The Hornets made their final four free throws to seal the victory.
"I was trying to work my way into a groove so I could be there at the end," said Fisher, who went 7-of-15 overall. "I was there at the end of the game, but we didn't have enough to get it done."
Fisher hit a floater in the line with two seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game at 103-103.
Hornets forward David West, who scored 13 points, had a chance to win it but misfired at the buzzer.
"We got the shot we wanted," Scott said. "I think he (West) took one too many dribbles and got off-balance."
Reserves Speedy Claxton had 21 points and seven assists and Synder scored 11 points for the Hornets (36-38), who remained two games behind Sacramento for the Western Conference's final playoff spot.
"We think it's going to take seven wins for us to get in," said Claxton, who made 8-of-16 shots. "We got number one. It is win or go home for us at this point."
"That's why those guys are here," Scott said about Claxton and Snyder. "Their job is to give us a boost, and be aggressive. We have a couple of guys who we rely on to do that, especially with P.J. (Brown) and Desmond (Mason) out of the lineup."
Jason Richardson collected 24 points and eight assists and Mike Dunleavy scored 19 for Golden State, which lost its sixth straight game.
