But on Thursday, the SuperSonics turned to their best shooter - and arguably the top marksman in the league - to get back in gear in impressive fashion.
"I've never seen anybody shoot the ball like that," Denver's Carmelo Anthony said. "There is really nothing you can do about it. It's frustrating."
Allen made 13-of-25 shots, including 8-of-14 3-pointers, en route to surpassing his previous season high of 35 points set against Golden State on December 13. He scored 10 points during a 28-9 run by Seattle that turned a four-point deficit into a 108-101 lead with 3:26 remaining.
"Shots were there for me tonight," Allen said. "We just tried to take what they gave us and we were very patient tonight. It was a fun game to be a part of."
Allen had a pair of 3-pointers in the pivotal burst, as well as a crafty lefthanded layup and a difficult fadeaway jumper that capped the surge.
"Our offense was clicking tonight," Sonics coach Bob Weiss said. "Ray was great tonight. He was moving without the ball well and when he got his shots, he drilled them."
Rashard Lewis provided Allen with plenty of support, scoring 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Ronald Murray chipped in 18 points and Damien Wilkins 12 for the Sonics, who shot a crisp 27-of-32 from the free-throw line.
"We know we are a good team," Allen said. "(Wednesday) night was a tough loss (at Minnesota) and things didn't go our way. But we stepped up as a team and everyone really played will together."
Coming off a career-high 45-point effort on Tuesday, Anthony scored 32 but did not make a field goal after the 6:13 mark of the third quarter.
"We put Wilkins on Anthony halfway through the third period to make Carmelo work harder," Weiss said. "We tried to get the ball out of his hands and double him as much as possible. It's satisfying to get the win, and this one means a lot for our psyche."
Earl Boykins added 22 points off the bench and Andre Miller collected 13 assists for the Nuggets, who lost for the ninth time this season when leading in the fourth quarter.
"What you are seeing is a team that lacks confidence to finish the game," said Nuggets coach George Karl, whose team has dropped six of its last eight games. "Right now, we've got too much weight on Melo's shoulders."
