Blazers-Hawks: Play |
The game was tied, 75-75, after Atlanta's Joe Johnson made a layup with 49 seconds left.
Rookie Martell Webster had a shot blocked by Atlanta's Josh Smith with 36 seconds to play and Miles missed a jumper six seconds later, giving the Hawks a chance to take the lead.
But Smith was whistled for an illegal assist on a missed turnaround by Johnson with 7.2 seconds remaining and the Trail Blazers called timeout.
Referee Phil Robinson ruled that the Hawks' second-year swingman had touched the rim while gathering Johnson's rebound, over the protests from a livid Hawks bench.
"The Josh Smith play was just a bogus point," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "The guy never even hung on the rim. I went back and watched it on the tape. It was a bad call. That kid just went to the rim and got an offensive rebound, and the official said he was hanging on the rim. He never touched the rim."
"They said I grabbed the rim to pull up and grab the rebound," Smith said. "I guess that's what they saw. I was shocked. I made a good play at the ball. Obviously, they thought it was different."
The game was reminiscent of the November 5 matchup between the two clubs. In that one, Hawks center Zaza Pachulia was whistled for a questionable foul on Zach Randolph with two-tenths of a second remaining. Randolph made the game-winning free throw to give Portland a 94-93 victory.
"That's the second time (that's happened to us)," Hawks guard Johnson said. "It is what it is. But it's over. We can't change it."
Miles inbounded to Randolph, who passed the ball back to the slender forward. Miles then sank his difficult turnaround over Pachulia to give Portland the lead. Following a timeout, Hawks rookie Salim Stoudamire missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
"We kind of figured the Hawks would switch, so Zach handed back off to me and I took the last shot," Stoudamire said.
Randolph collected 24 points and 15 rebounds and Miles added 12 points for Portland, which made just 3-of-15 3-pointers, but prevented Atlanta from making any of its six attempts from behind the arc.
Al Harrington contributed 16 points and nine rebounds and Pachulia had 15 and 10 for the Hawks, who held a 63-50 lead late in the third quarter before allowing Portland to go on an 18-2 run bridging the final two periods.
"Instead of slowing the game down and really executing, we kind of played a little bit selfish," Harrington said. "Everybody started going 1-on-1 and doing things that didn't help us get the lead. It caught up to us."
Webster scored 10 of the Blazers' 18 points during the span.
"I've got to be ready when my name's called," Webster said. "When I go out there, I'm ready to shoot. Fortunately, they fell."
The Blazers have won nine straight against the hapless Hawks, who fell to 0-10 against Western Conference opponents.
