PHOENIX, Oct. 15 (Ticker) -- Daniel Ewing is doing his best to break into a crowded backcourt.

Ewing started and scored 12 points and fellow Duke product Corey Maggette added 21 as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Phoenix Suns, 90-87, in a preseason contest.

A second-round pick in the 2005 draft, Ewing was 4-of-9 from the floor with four rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes.

The rookie made a pair of free throws and a jumper during a three-minute spurt midway through the fourth quarter that turned a five-point advantage into an 86-75 lead with four minutes remaining.

A 6-4 swingman who played some point guard in college, Ewing will be competing with Sam Cassell, Shaun Livingston, Cuttino Mobley and Maggette for playing time.

Maggette made 3-of-5 shots from the arc and all six of his free throws in 31 minutes and Rodney White added 13 points off the Clippers' bench.

Reigning MVP Steve Nash, who missed the opener Friday against Seattle, scored 14 points and made 5-of-8 shots in 26 minutes for Phoenix. James Jones, acquired this season from the Indiana Pacers, led the way for the Suns with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

The Clippers played without Cassell, Livingston, Elton Brand, Chris Kaman and Zeljko Rebraca.
