Already without All-Star guard Baron Davis, who has been out since November 17 with an inflamed disk in his lower back, the Hornets lost All-Star center Jamaal Magloire to a broken finger Friday in a loss at Phoenix.
They hung tough in this one, taking a 42-41 lead into halftime on the strength of Darrell Armstrong's 14 points.
But Atkins, who did not attempt a shot in the first half, scored 12 in the third quarter. He assisted on Brian Cook's 3-pointer that gave the Lakers the lead for good, 65-63, and hit a jumper 30 seconds later to provide Los Angeles a four-point edge heading into the fourth.
Atkins, who scored just 13 points on 3-of-18 shooting in his previous two games, scored five more during a key 8-2 run that left the Lakers up, 84-72, with 3:49 left.
Kobe Bryant scored 20 points and Lamar Odom added 14 and 14 rebounds to notch his eighth double-double this season for Los Angeles.
Armstrong finished with 21 points and Junior Harrington scored a season-high 14 off the bench for New Orleans. Aside from Armstrong, the Hornets starters shot 11-of-43 (26 percent) from the floor.
