Earlier this week, the durable Malone was battling a head cold and went scoreless for the first time in his illustrious career in Sunday's loss at Seattle. His condition worsened to the flu and he sat out Wednesday' home loss to Detroit, just the 10th time he has missed a game in xx-plus seasons.
Malone started slowly, scoring just six points in the first half. But he set the tone on both ends at the outset of the second half, when the Jazz took control of the game. Malone scored 13 points in the third period, including eight in an 18-4 burst that opened the second half. He had eight more in the fourth quarter, when he shoved Theo Ratliff before having words with Atlanta's center.
Matt Harpring scored 25 points off the bench for the Jazz, who have won their last nine home meetings with the Hawks.
Jason Terry made a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 31 points for Atlanta, which beat Utah in its opener but failed in a bid for its first season sweep since the 1992-93 campaign.
