Moe serves as a consultant for the Nuggets, but one of his coaching highlights came against Detroit on December 13, 1983 in a 186-184 triple-overtime loss that was the highest scoring game in NBA history.
As for the current Nuggets, first-year coach Jeff Bzdelik watched them set a team record for fewest points in a home game.
"We played a good basketball team," Bzdelik said. "Coming into this game, I was concerned about our ability to score. At halftime, we had 41 shots, which is a good number against a team that is very good defensively.
"I'm not discouraged. My skin is thicker than this. I knew what I was in for. I'm just going back to work tomorrow and show them all the flim, drill them in practice, teach them and go to work again on Saturday night until they tell me to get out of here."
Denver had a 12-7 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter. But it was all downhill thereafter as the Nuggets shot 4-of-19 in the second period and fell behind at halftime, 41-31.
The Pistons pulled away with a 20-5 run that was capped by Billups' 3-pointer. A Denver native, Billups made 6-of-10 shots, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
Billups scored 10 points over the final 4:48 of the third quarter. He made three 3-pointers, his final one giving Detroit its largest lead, 69-42.
"It is definitely like a home game for me," said Billups, who played at the University of Colorado and with the Nuggets from 1998-2000. "I definitely play for bragging rights. I am home all summer and I work out in the Pepsi Center with most of these guys. So I probably stepped it up a little more."
"We wanted to keep the pressure on them," Pistons guard Richard Hamilton said. "We did that early in the third quarter and never looked back."
James Posey tried to rally the Nuggets, scoring their first seven points of the fourth quarter to make it 71-52 with 9:29 to go. But he was held scoreless the rest of the way and Clifford Robinson scored six straight points for the Pistons.
Posey had 21 points for the Nuggets, who shot 32 percent (23-of-72) en route to the lowest point total in the NBA this season.
"It is tough any night," Posey said. "National TV or not, we just want to play well every game. You are going to have nights like this. We just hope that we do not have too many of them."
"Our defense was consistent again," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "Offensively, our execution was better and that helped us pull away. I was really happy with Chauncey. His shot-making was the difference in the game."
