HOUSTON, Oct. 20 (Ticker) --
Reserves Juaquin Hawkins and Tierre Brown
came up big in the final minutes as the Houston Rockets edged the Orlando Magic 101-96 Sunday in a preseason contest.
After Pat Garrity
capped a 9-0 run with a jumper that put Orlando ahead 94-93 with 2:35 to play, Hawkins made a reverse layup with 1:20 left to put the Rockets briefly back in front.
Rookie Ryan Humphrey
dunked with 28 seconds to play to give the Magic a 96-95 edge, but Brown countered with a layup with 15 seconds remaining to give the Rockets the lead for good.
After Darrell Armstrong
was whistled for charging, Hawkins nailed a pair of free throws to give Houston a three-point edge with 11 seconds to play, and Brown closed out the game with two more from the line following an errant pass from Jacque Vaughn
led six players in double figures with 16 points for Houston, which shot 53 percent (39-of-73) from the field and limited the Magic to 42 percent (35-of-84).
The Rockets, who improved to 4-1 in preseason play, had the top overall draft pick, 7-5 center Yao Ming, in attendance. Yao arrived in Houston on Sunday after getting clearance from Chinese officials to join the team.
Armstrong scored 18 points and Tracy McGrady
16 for Orlando, which dropped to 2-4.
