PHOENIX, Oct. 17 (Ticker) -- Amare Stoudemire made an impressive home
debut for the Phoenix Suns, but the Houston Rockets recorded an
85-78 preseason victory as Eddie Griffin led a balanced attack
with 15 points.
Stoudemire, the ninth overall pick in the 2002 draft out of
Cypress Creek High School in Florida, led the Suns with 17
points on 7-of-15 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds in 30
minutes.
A basket by Stoudemire two minutes into the fourth quarter gave
Phoenix a 64-58 lead, but the Rockets stormed back with a 10-2
spurt and took the lead for good, 68-66, on a pair of free
throws by Oscar Torres with 6:31 to play.
Jason Collier had 12 points and Torres finished with 10 for
Houston, which was without injured guards Steve Francis (left
ankle tendinitis) and Moochie Norris (sore right pinky) and top
draft pick Yao Ming.
Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion each chipped in 14 points for
the Suns.
