SALT LAKE CITY, April 17 (Ticker) -- Tony Parker finished a memorable rookie season in spectacular fashion.

Parker scored on a driving layup with two seconds left to snap a tie as the San Antonio Spurs captured the Midwest Division title with an 86-84 victory over the Utah Jazz.

San Antonio won its ninth straight game to claim the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and will face Seattle in the first round. The Spurs and SuperSonics split four meetings this season.

"We're really thrilled with the win on the road to win the division," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "This is as good a year as I've ever seen in the regular season in San Antonio because we're basically a new team."

With the score tied 84-84, Utah's Karl Malone missed a jumper with 12 seconds left and Tim Duncan grabbed the rebound. Duncan threw an outlet to Parker, who raced downcourt, where he was almost fouled by Utah rookie Andrei Kirilenko.

Parker got past Kirilenko and banked in a difficult layup as the stunned Jazz looked on. The 20-year-old French native exchanged an emphatic chest bump with Spurs guard Bruce Bowen.

"It was a long rebound," Parker said. "I saw Popovich say, 'Go ahead' and we didn't call time out so I tried to go to the basket and tried to go strong and go in so we could win the game."

Utah had one final chance, but Bryon Russell failed to draw iron on a 3-point attempt as time expired.

"They slapped us around a couple of times and took the anxiety away from us and that's why they're a much better team," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They started fighting a little bit harder and that's what playoff basketball is about."

The Jazz slipped to eighth and a first-round meeting with Sacramento. That is not good news since the Kings have throttled Utah by an average of 22.8 points in four victories this season.

Duncan put an exclamation point on his credentials for the Most Valuable Player award by finishing with 26 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and seven blocks. Duncan finished the season with a league-leading 64 double-doubles.

"We really needed this one tonight," Duncan said. "It was a battle. They're tough in this building, they really are. We came in here and thought we performed well."

Duncan's three-point play gave San Antonio a 41-31 lead with four minutes left before halftime. Utah sliced the deficit to 46-42 at intermission. Danny Ferry's jumper provided the Spurs' largest lead at 67-56, but the Jazz scored the final six points of the third to trail by just five.

The game was close throughout the final quarter and Parker made two foul shots for an 84-80 lead with 1:54 left. John Stockton banked in a short jumper and Russell knotted the score with a jumper with 53 seconds left.

Ferry was the only other Spur in double figures with 10 points. Terry Porter drilled three 3-pointers off the bench for nine points and added five assists.

San Antonio captured the Midwest title for the second straight season and third time in four years. The only other team to win the division in that span was Utah in the 1999-2000 season.

The 40-year-old Stockton took advantage of Parker for most of the night and finished with 23 points and 10 assists. Malone added 15 points but made just 3-of-13 shots.

"All of your mistakes are forgotten," said Stockton about the playoffs. "If you did poor, you get to start from scratch now and hopefully that's a positive for us."

Utah will open the playoffs on the road for the first time since 1994 and fell to 3-14 against the top five teams in the Western Conference.
