A little more than 24 hours after losing a thrilling contest to Portland on Sunday, the Lakers put themselves in position to finish the season third in the West, by moving a half-game ahead of the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks. San Antonio and Dallas have games on Tuesday and Wednesday while Los Angeles finishes its season at home against the NBA-leading Sacramento Kings.

O'Neal shot 16-of-21 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Kobe Bryant added 19 points and Derek Fisher 13 for the Lakers, who matched their longest winning streak at the Staples Center with their 14th consecutive home victory. They have not lost here since a 109-108 defeat to the Boston Celtics on February 19 and duplicated the streak from November 24, 1999-January 10, 2000.

Los Angeles (56-24) also improved to 8-11 in the second game of back-to-back contests.

Gary Payton had 20 points and eight assists and Predrag Drobnjak contributed 18 points for Seattle, which fell into eighth place in the West -- one-half game behind the Utah Jazz.
