Hassell made four 3-pointers as the Bulls connected on 50 percent (10-of-20) of their shots from the arc. None was bigger than his last one, which broke a 100-100 tie.

Hassell came off a screen and fired a shot from the top of the key that banked off the glass and sent the United Center crowd into a frenzy.

"I thank God for the bank shot Trenton made from the 3-point line," Cartwright said. "We had a couple of other shots where we were under five seconds. They were big points and they were big shots."

"They made a lot of tough shots," Celtics guard Paul Pierce said. "They did not have anything to lose. Hassell made a tough bank shot with time running out. What can you say? They made a lot of tough shots tonight. We cannot take anything away from that."

The Celtics have had success from the beyond the arc during their first winning season since 1992-93. They entered with a league-leading 355 3-pointers were 13-of-39 in this game. But Antoine Walker's attempt from long range rimmed out with three seconds left, the Bulls grabbed the rebound and Travis Best sealed the win with two free throws.

"They made shots. There's nothing you can do about that," Walker said. "We expended a lot of energy last night. We played well enough to put ourselves in a position to win. That was a tough shot that went in."

Marcus Fizer had 21 points for Chicago, while Walker led all scorers with 33 for Boston. But Walker had just three points in the final 12 minutes and Pierce had four.

The Celtics trailed 75-74 after three quarters but opened the fourth with a 9-3 run and took an 83-78 lead on Erick Strickland's 3-pointer with 9:50 left.

The Bulls hung around, getting jumpers from Best and Fizer and a dunk by Fizer that made it 85-84 with 8:02 to play. Fizer hit another jumper to put Chicago in front, 87-86, with 7:16 left. But Pierce countered with his only basket of the fourth.

The Bulls eventually built a 98-93 lead on Fred Hoiberg's 3-pointer with 3:21 left but nearly gave it away.

Best and Jalen Rose missed 3-pointers and Walker connected from beyond the arc and Strickland made a pair of foul shots to tie it at 98-98 with 1:46 remaining.

Celtics coach Jim O'Brien refused to use Sunday's win in New Jersey as an excuse.

"The nature of the NBA is that you have to win games in back-to-back situations," O'Brien said. "We do not use the excuse of being fatigued. We have not used that excuse all year and we are not going to start that now. You have to play your schedule you are dealt with."

Boston (45-33) leads Orlando (42-34) by 2 1/2 games for the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago shot a season-high 55 percent (42-of-76) and had five players in double figures. Hassell finished with 18 points, Jamal Crawford added 17, teenage rookie Eddy Curry chipped in 14 and Rose 13.
