CHARLOTTE, NC, March 20 (Ticker) -- With each good play Baron Davis makes, the Charlotte Hornets' faithful give the point guard a Ric Flair-like "Whoo" salute. On Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers, there were a lot of "Whoo's."

Davis, who stars in a commercial with the wrestling legend and Charlotte resident, had 25 points -- including a clutch 3-pointer -- with 10 assists and eight rebounds as the Hornets moved into a tie with the Pacers for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a 94-88 victory.

After the Pacers whittled a nine-point deficit with 3:25 left to 89-88 on a pair of free throws by Kevin Ollie with 50 seconds remaining, Davis nailed his shot from the arc with 15 seconds to go, giving the Hornets a four-point cushion. Indiana would not score again.

Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and Elden Campbell added 18 for the Hornets, who won their season-high fourth straight contest.

"I think we're pretty good," Mashburn said. "We've always had chemistry. Now we're starting to play. Everyone is playing hard. We're coming together at the right time. We want to work our game each night."

Jermaine O'Neal paced Indiana with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Austin Croshere added 16 points and Jonathan Bender 13 for the Pacers, who lost for the sixth straight time in Charlotte and had a season-high four-game winning streak snapped.

"Our undoing was the offensive rebounds and then they got the ball and scored on stick-backs, and that was a killer for us," O'Neal said.

"From the angle the balls were shot from, I would see the balls coming off, but they hit and most of them took a flare the other way."

"Charlotte is a very capable offensive team," Croshere said. "Unfortunately, we gave them too many second shots and left them open down the stretch. We're a good half-court defensive team, but it doesn't do any good if you can't get stops and finish with the rebound."

Charlotte outrebounded Indiana, 47-41, and had a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass.

"That's where they bet us the last game, too," said Indiana coach Isiah Thomas, whose team lost the meeting on February 15, 116-106. "We do a good job of defending, make them miss, but then they go get the ball and it creates extra shots for them. You have to give Charlotte credit. That's what they do, shoot and go get it. They are a big, strong team, and we're aware of that and we talk about it, but we still get beat by it."

Neither team shot well. Indiana made 41 percent (31-of-75) of its attempts and Charlotte 40 percent (37-of-92).

The game went back and forth until Mashburn hit a jumper with 7:31 left in the third quarter to give the Hornets the lead for good, 59-57.

Charlotte took its biggest advantage at 87-78 on a 3-pointer by David Wesley with 3:25 left. O'Neal scored the next six points before Mashburn hit a jumper to make it 89-84.

Ollie hit a layup and a pair at the line to get the Pacers within one before Davis' heroics.

"It was a hard-fought game," Thomas said. "Both teams played hard. It just came down to the little things like the ball bouncing the wrong way a couple of times and Charlotte outhustling us to the ball."

Both teams are 34-33, 2 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Miami.

"We were right there but Baron stepped up and hit a big shot," said Ron Artest, who had 11 points for the Pacers. "We kept fighting and playing hard and gave ourselves a chance. They basically out-hustled us. It was a game they needed, and they got it. We just have to hustle and we'll win some games. They were just bigger and stronger and used their muscles and got a whole lot of rebounds."

"Now it's time for us to make a push," Silas said. "We've got to go on the road (at Orlando and Indiana) and make it happen. If we play good defense no matter where we play, we'll give ourselves a chance to win. Orlando has been rolling. (Tracy) McGrady is unstoppable, so we have our hands full. Hopefully our size will cause them some problems."
