WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (Ticker) -- The Washington Wizards played with plenty of heart, but without Michael Jordan, they just did not have enough weapons to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers.

Rasheed Wallace had 22 points and 13 rebounds as Portland extended its season-high winning streak to seven games and handed Washington its sixth straight defeat, 105-101.

After Derek Anderson hit a 3-pointer to give Portland its biggest lead, 95-85, with 6:31 remaining, Washington scored seven straight points in less than 2 1/2 minutes.

But Scottie Pippen, Jordan's long-time right-hand man with the Chicago Bulls, stopped the run with a 3-pointer and hit 3-of-4 free throws to give the Trail Blazers a 101-92 cushion with 2:22 left.

Chris Whitney countered with a 3-pointer and two free throws and Richard Hamilton hit a leaning banker in the paint to get Washington within 101-99 with 18 seconds remaining.

Following a pair of free throws from Damon Stoudamire with 17 seconds to go, Hamilton hit a pair to make it 103-101 with 7.2 seconds left.

Pippen lost control of the ensuing inbounds pass but was fouled by Courtney Alexander and iced the game with a pair of free throws with 6.5 seconds to go.

Ruben Patterson added 20 points, Pippen chipped in 19 and Dale Davis had 16 and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who outrebounded the Wizards, 49-37.

"We didn't want to take this team for granted even though they were missing a lot of players," Patterson said. "I'm just glad we got the win. When we see them again, we see them in Portland. It was just a great win for us."

The Wizards played without centers Jahidi White (left shoulder strain) and Brendan Haywood (sore left knee) and were dominated on the offensive glass, 20-8. Portland converted those rebounds into 26 second-chance points, 20 more than Washington.

Washington, which only received 17 points from its starting frontcourt of Tyrone Nesby, Popeye Jones and Christian Laettner, made up for its lack of size by running. The Wizards outscored the Blazers on the break, 28-17.

"I like it," Hamilton said of the fast-paced style. "I enjoy it. We have a lot of up-tempo guys on this team. Guys that want to run. We try to get up and down the floor when we're out there together."

Portland was outshot by Washington, 49 percent (41-of-84) to 41 percent (37-of-91). It held the Wizards scoreless for the first 3:51 of the fourth quarter and limited them to 29 percent (5-of-17) overall in the final period.

"Tonight we didn't make shots and our defense wasn't at its best," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "But late in the game we made a couple shots and late in the game we made a couple defensive stops."

Hamilton scored 31 points and Whitney 19 and a season-high 11 assists for Washington, which played its first game since Jordan had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage on his right knee.

"Anything can happen with this team," Hamilton said. "The one thing with us is that we want to get better. Every night we come in and expect to win a basketball game. Without Michael it's definitely tough. But we got guys ready to step up, that want to play."

Washington scored a season-high 61 points in the first half on 63 percent shooting (26-of-41) but still trailed by three at the break.

The Wizards began the third quarter on a 9-0 run, taking its biggest lead, 70-64, on a layup and free throw by Nesby -- his only points of the game -- with 9:03 left in the period.

But Patterson scored 11 points throughout the rest of the period, including a dunk with 1:05 left that gave Portland an 83-80 lead.

Tyronn Lue tied it at 83-83 entering the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, but Portland scored the first seven points of the final period as part of a 12-2 run that ended with Anderson's shot from the arc.

"It was a game where we had to play well and execute down the stretch and that's what we did to close it out," Pippen said.

With the win, the Blazers improved to 8-1 after the All-Star break. They have won five six in a row against the Wizards and five straight at the MCI Center since a loss on March 22, 1997.

"It was a hard-fought win," said Stoudamire, who shot just 3-of-15 for nine points but had 11 assists. "It took everything we had to get the win tonight. They played real hard, give them credit, they played hard regardless of who was out there on the floor."

Washington fell to 1-8 after the All-Star break.

"I think we did great," Hamilton said. "We can win games. They are one of ther most talented teams in the league. We stuck with them until the fourth quarter. If we have the energy we had tonight, we can win."
