Less than 24 hours after outlasting Indiana in double overtime, the Mavericks edged the white-hot New Jersey Nets, 112-100, for their seventh straight road victory.

Dallas was coming off a 141-140 win at Conseco Fieldhouse and did not arrive on the East Coast until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, leaving it just 14 hours to prepare for the best team in the Eastern Conference. However, the Mavericks had no problems.

Dirk Nowitzki had 22 points and nine rebounds and fellow All-Star Steve Nash added 18 points and 12 assists for Dallas, which improved to 2-0 on a six-game road trip and its franchise record for consecutive wins away from home. The next four games are after the All-Star break.

"We've been there before," said Nowitzki of playing on limited sleep. "You get used to it. I thought it would be tough to come back, but obviously it wasn't. We ran the floor with them, shared the ball, made shots and were able to grind it out in the end."

After Jason Kidd hit a 3-pointer to give New Jersey a 98-96 lead with 6:12 remaining, the Mavericks closed on a 16-2 run. They scored the final 11 points after Kenyon Martin's alley-oop dunk reduced the deficit to 101-100 with 4:25 left.

Six Dallas players reached double figures, including reserve Wang Zhizhi, who recorded a career-high 15 points. The Mavs played without starting forward Juwan Howard, who was handed a one-game suspension and fined $7,500 for elbowing Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley in the head Tuesday.

Without Howard's inside presence, the Mavericks were beaten on the boards, 49-37. New Jersey snatched 23 offensive rebounds while Dallas only grabbed seven.

"It was tough out there (without Howard)," Nowitzki said. "They had a lot of offensive rebounds. They had a lot of second shots, second opportunities, but we rebounded when we had to. If we had lost a tough one last night, tonight would've been a different story."

Alyhough Dallas made only 5-of-20 3-point attempts, it shot 51 percent (40-of-78) overall and limited New Jersey to 40 percent (38-of-95).

The Mavericks sank all 27 of their free throws, the most in franchise history without a miss. The Nets made just 16-of-24 from the line.

Martin tallied 26 points and Keith Van Horn added 21 for New Jersey, which had an eight-game home winning streak snapped. Kidd chipped in 14, 12 assists and a career-high-tying six steals for the Nets, who had won three straight and 12 of 15 entering the contest.

"We played their game tonight," Martin said. "We shot 29 threes. That is not our game. We settled for a lot of jump shots. We were normally pretty good at taking the ball to the hole but that wasn't the case tonight."

The Nets fell to 19-1 in games played on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and to 7-1 in revenge games. Despite the loss, New Jersey completed a 3-1 homestand with victories over contenders Milwaukee, Toronto and Sacramento.

"Three-and-one isn't too bad against the elite teams in the league," Kidd said. "We can't be down. Yes, we would have loved to win tonight going into the All-Star break, but we have accomplished a lot and we still have a long way to go."

Despite missing Howard and Greg Buckner and Eduardo Najera due to injuries, the Mavs' bench outscored New Jersey's reserves, 40-24.

Dallas shot 56 percent (24-of-43) in the first half en route to a 64-52 advantage. Nash scored 15 points and Nowitzki and Adrian Griffin added 10 apiece.

"For whatever reason tonight, it really looked to me, in the first quarter especially, that we played last night and went to double overtime and that they were the team that was sitting there waiting on us," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We just didn't have any energy for whatever reason. We were very soft defensively at the beginning of the game."

New Jersey trailed, 74-67, midway through the third quarter before going on a run and taking an 83-82 lead on a three-point play by rookie reserve Jason Collins with 1:06 left in the period.

Collins registered another three-point play to give the Nets their biggest lead, 86-82, before Nowitzki hit a pair of free throws to end the third quarter.

"I'm very proud of this team, coming into two hostile places in the East, playing against Indiana in double overtime and winning up here," said Tim Hardaway, whose 3-pointer with 5:49 left gave the Mavs the lead for good at 99-98.

"Then we had enough courage to come out here and play, we only had nine people and we played a hell of a ballgame against the No. 1 team in the East."

The Mavericks enter the All-Star break at 35-14, two games ahead of Minnesota in the Midwest Division.

"This is probably the best start I've ever had," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "I can't remember having a better one. I've had some real good ones record-wise. The skill of this team and the injuries we've had, I've never had a better start."

"I barely had enough left in me," Nash said. "It was a very difficult game for us considering the circumstances. I feel very proud of the way we played because it's very easy to take an early break when you have a game before the All-Star break. Especially with a back-to-back and a double-overtime game last night that was draining. I feel good."
