SEATTLE, Dec. 17 (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored eight of his 26 points in a third-quarter surge to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to a 114-91 victory over the struggling Orlando Magic.

Payton helped put the SuperSonics in control, powering an 18-9 run over the final 6 1/2 minutes of the quarter that opened an 83-72 lead.

The run continued at the start of the fourth period as Seattle scored 13 of the first 16 points, building a 96-75 advantage with 7 1/2 minutes to play.

An 11-year veteran and perennial All-Star, Payton averaged 29 points in two meetings with the Magic this season.

The loss was Orlando's fifth in the last six games, all on the road. But the Magic lost more than a game as All-Star guard Tracy McGrady left in the first quarter with a strained lower back and did not return.

The victory was Seattle's eighth in its last nine home meetings with Orlando.
