Knicks 86, Spurs 83
SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Latrell Sprewell scored 20 points as the New York Knicks overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat San Antonio 86-83 Thursday night, dealing the Spurs their first home loss of the season.
The Knicks took their first lead of the game with 9:09 left in the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws by Chris Childs. They widened the lead to five with 4:25 left on a jumper by Glen Rice, but the Spurs got to 84-83 with 1:08 left on a layup by Sean Elliott followed by a 20-foot jumper by Derek Anderson.
After Tim Duncan missed a 15-foot jumper for the Spurs, Allan Houston fired a 22-footer over Anderson's outstretched arm to make it 86-83.
Anderson threw up an airball from 3-point range with 14 seconds left. After Houston was tied up for a jump ball, Anderson missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Rice scored 19 points for the Knicks, while Houston finished with 17 on 6-of-17 shooting. Marcus Camby, who had been averaging 10.5 points a game, scored 10 in the third quarter and finished with 16.
Duncan scored 28 points as the 6-foot-7 Larry Johnson _ responsible for guarding the 7-foot Duncan as he was when the Knicks lost to the Spurs in the 1999 NBA Finals _ got into foul trouble.
Duncan also had 10 rebounds, but shot just 8-of-14 from the foul line.
Anderson added 15 points for the Spurs, while David Robinson picked up four fouls and finished with 11 points.
New York's top-rated defense held San Antonio to 40.9 percent shooting, compared with 45.5 percent for the Knicks.
Though Kurt Thomas and Luc Longley joined Johnson in picking up five fouls apiece, the Knicks managed to surge back after trailing 63-49 with 7:49 left in the third quarter.
New York held the Spurs scoreless for nearly four minutes while scoring eight points, sparked by a dunk by Camby with 5:56 left in the period. Houston and Rice nailed jumpers while Camby and Sprewell dropped in layups to make it 65-62. Notes:@ The Philadelphia 76ers are now the only NBA team with a perfect record at home this season. The Spurs had been riding an eight-game home winning streak. ... The Knicks made it to the foul line only 14 times to the Spurs' 34, but shot 85.7 percent from the line to the Spurs' 73.5 percent. ... Anderson wore a bandage over his right eye because of a cut he got against Sacramento on Tuesday.
