DEEP POST – The offensive player sets up outside the foul lane in the low post. He pivots to create space for himself deep under the basket, and looks to receive an entry pass from the top of the key for a shot from close range.
ELBOW – The intersection of the free throw line and the side of the lane.
HEDGE AND RECOVER - On screen and roll plays, the defender playing the screener steps out toward the ball handler and hedges, or helps, to defend him. When his teammate fights through the screen and picks up the ball handler again, the defensive player recovers and returns to his own man.
HIGH POST - An imaginary area outside either side of the foul lane near the free throw line.
LOW POST - An imaginary area outside either side of the foul lane close to the basket where the center or a power forward is often positioned.
MIDDLE PICK AND ROLL – (Also called a HIGH PICK AND ROLL) A pick that is set anywhere above the foul line. An offensive player sets a pick to create space for his teammate, and then rolls to the basket.
PICK - An offensive tactic to block the path of a defender to free up a teammate with the ball for a scoring opportunity. He can use his body, not his arms and legs, and he must be stationary after setting the pick.
PICK AND ROLL – An offensive play in which a player sets a pick for a teammate, then "rolls" toward the basket and receives a pass from the teammate for an open shot.
PIVOT - The area near the basket, generally where the center operates, or the act of changing directions, by keeping one foot planted on the ground while stepping in one or more directions with the other foot.
POST or POST POSITION – The position of a player standing in the low post or high post.
SCREEN - An offensive tactic to block the path of a defender to free up a teammate looking to receive the ball. He can use his body, not his arms and legs, and he must be stationary after setting the pick.
SIDE PICK AND ROLL – An offensive player comes from the baseline and sets a pick on the defensive player guarding the ball handler. He then rolls to the basket to receive a pass from his teammate.
STACK - An offensive alignment in which two players set up in the low post on one side of the lane, and a third player is in the low post on the other side. Often used for throw-ins from behind the baseline.
STEP UP PICK AND ROLL - The screener comes from the baseline and sets the pick on the back of the defender, giving the ball handler an opening to drive to the basket. The screener will then roll to the basket.
