YAO-SHAQ I: JAN. 17, 2003
"He's like a truck. I've never encountered someone that strong before."
HOUSTON -- The Shaq-Yao showdown was stolen by Steve Francis. Francis scored a career-high 44 points, stealing the spotlight away from Shaquille O'Neal and Yao Ming and lifting Houston to a 108-104 overtime victory over the Lakers.
The first meeting between O'Neal, the 7-2, 350-pound superstar center of the Lakers, and Yao, the 7-5, 300-pound rookie center of the Rockets, began with a bang and had its moments.
But the game's biggest star was Francis, who made 12-of-21 shots, 6-of-8 3-pointers, 14-of-17 free throws and handed out 11 assists. He made a 3-pointer to force overtime, then made six foul shots in the extra session before finding Yao for a crucial dunk with 10.2 seconds remaining.
"It's certainly one of my top performances," Francis said. "With Yao and Shaquille, I didn't want to overshadow that. My points came within the flow of the game. I got into a groove and hit a shot."
INTERIM NOTES
"I look forward to playing with and against him in years to come. I'm glad he's here."
-- Shaquille O'Neal
Here's how Yao Ming and Shaquille O'Neal - and the Rockets and Lakers in general - have fared since Houston's win over L.A. on Jan. 17:
In 12 games, the Rockets have gone 4-8, including losses to division rivals Dallas, San Antonio, Utah and Minnesota.
Yao went into a slump, averaging only 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds in the five games following his matchup with Shaq. But he's been back on track since Jan. 29, averaging 18.3 points and 9.1 boards.
The Lakers have gone 8-2 since their loss to the Rockets behind monster performances from Kobe Bryant, who has scored 35.4 points per game over that span.
Shaq, too, continues to dominate, averaging 25.9 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.70 blocks since meeting Yao.
In the All-Star Game, for which Yao was voted the starter over Shaq, O'Neal got the majority of the playing time, logging 26 minutes to Yao's 17. Shaq finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Yao took only one shot, scoring two points and grabbing two boards.
