April 16 -- Let NBA.com's Nifty Numbers help take the guess work out of the playoff chase and division championship races.

With just one night left in the 2007-2008 season, it's time to start thinking playoffs. All 16 playoff spots have been accounted for, and the Eastern Conference matchups are locked in. Division winners Boston, (No. 1) Detroit (No. 2) and Orlando (No. 3) own the top three seeds, and are followed in order by Cleveland,Washington, Toronto, Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Out West, the Lakers and Hornets are locked in at Nos. 1 and 2. However, the third through six thseeds are in limbo, as Utah, San Antonio, Houston and Phoenix could all finish at 55-27, meaning tiebreakers would decide the order, with the caveat that the division-winning Jazz can't finish lower than fourth, and Houston not higher than fifth. The last two spots belong to Dallas and Denver, and while a Dallas win or Denver loss means the Mavericks are seventh, if they lose and the Nuggets win, Denver passes them by.

Phew.

Note: A "P" under Current Playoff Seeding does not mean the team has clinched that specific seed, but rather been assured a playoff berth.

* - Number of wins by division or playoff leader
** - Number of losses by second place team (for divisional races) or team in the ninth spot (for playoffs)
Nifty # = (Games in the season + 1) - (No. of wins for division leader) - (No. of losses for second-place team)
^ - Nifty # calculation would be one number higher, but team holds head-to-head tiebreaker with second-place team (divisional race) or ninth spot (playoff berth).
Division Champs - Playoff seeding changed last season to guarantee one of the top four seeds in each conference to division winners. The three teams and the next best team in the conference are seeded based on record.
C - Clinched conference championship
D - Clinched division championship
P - Clinched playoff berth
X - Eliminated from playoffs contention

Tiebreaker Basis
(1) Head-to-head
(2) Division record (if the teams are in the same division)
(3) Conference record
(4) Record vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(5) Record vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(6) Net points, all games
