BIg Third Quarter Lifts USA

SAITAMA, Japan, Aug. 30 -- Germany played zone defense in the first half and Team USA struggled to find its shooting rhythm, leading by just one at halftime.

After intermission, USA Basketball went to its No. 1 problem solver during the FIBA World Championship - Carmelo Anthony - and, as usual, the forward didn't disappoint.

Anthony fired in 10 of his 19 points in the third quarter to ignite the USA in Wednesday's 85-65 quarterfinal victory. USA went on a 20-6 run to start the third period and opened up a comfortable double-digit lead.

"We missed some early shots," said LeBron James of the U.S. "But, we never got down on ourselves. The same shots we missed in the first half, we made in the second half. We made the adjustment."

Germany led by as many as five in the first quarter and thanks to Ademola Okulaja, who scored 11 of his 15 in the half, trailed by one, 40-39, at intermission.

Team USA had success cracking the zone in the second half and used its defense (24 forced turnovers) to get easy baskets.

James finished with 13 points and Joe Johnson dropped in 11 for Team USA.

Dirk Nowitzki also scored 15 points for Germany.

"We wanted to contain him (Nowitzki)," USA forward Chris Bosh said. "We felt if he struggled, they would struggle. It was a real good team effort in defending him."

Team USA, which is now 7-0 at the World Championship, will play Greece on Friday at 3:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2.

"It's down to the final four and the four best teams are still alive to win the championship," said Team USA's Shane Battier. "That's the way it should be."
