Apr. 10 -- Sometimes writing about injuries can be a real pain. A lot has transpired since last week, let's take a look at the latest injury news....
F Wally Szczerbiak had surgery on his left knee and is done for the year. PG Jason Williams has been shutdown for the regular season, though he will play during the playoffs. The Raptors won't be in the playoffs, and their star player F/C Chris Bosh is now officially done for the season, though if you listened to me last week, you already knew that. F/C "Three Game" Amare Stoudemire is also done for the regular season with surgery on his right knee: not the one he had micro fracture surgery on. There is a small chance he could return if the Suns go deep into the playoffs, but that's no help to his regular-season fantasy owners. G/F Tracy McGrady and F/C Emeka Okafor are both still officially out for the season; PG Baron Davis and F Grant Hill aren't officially out for the year, but I don't see either one coming back this year.
To be honest, I would rather have a player out for the year than most of the day-to-day players right now. No matter how much information we might have as to a player's likelihood to play, we have no way of actually knowing if a player will play. A coach might decide that the player needs another day of rest, the player might aggravate an injury in practice, a player might get abducted by aliens. Sure some of those scenarios are more likely than others, but none are predictable. Nonetheless, I am here to give you the latest news on the walking wounded so you can make the most educated picks for this, the most important week of the fantasy season.
I have seen F/C Etan Thomas pimped more than one time as a nice center option down the stretch, but that's no longer the case as a strained lower back suffered Friday night will likely keep Thomas out for at least a week. I guess he actually belongs in the See You Next Year section, but that would require all that complicated cut-and-paste stuff. C Brendan Haywood will start in Thomas' place, and if you're really desperate for rebounds, he can get them. Though G/F Bernard Robinson Jr. is officially out indefinitely with a broken index finger, in theory he could come back for a game or two. I wrote last week that PG Stephon Marbury was done for the year, but he continues to be listed as day-to-day. If you have him, you might be tempted to start him. Don't. There's no reason for him to return this year.
F Kenyon Martin is perpetually in the "day-to-day" condition. I hope you have better options than Martin, like G/F Hedo Turkoglu, who should be good to go after having an MRI on his right knee come back negative. F Caron Butler has missed the last two games with a sprained thumb, but he did warm up before Saturday's game, so a return to the court tonight is probable, though his shot might be off a little. G Jason Richardson finally missed a game due to his sore knee and might not want to be someone you rely on next week. PG Gilbert Arenas will play through a lower back strain, at least until the Wizards clinch the five seed in the Eastern Conference. Keeping with the bad-back brigade, F Rasheed Wallace left Friday's game due to back spasms, and F Chris Webber sat out Saturday's game with a lower back sprain. Wallace should be fine, though he will likely see a reduction in playing time soon anyway. Weber's injury is more problematic. With the 76ers fighting for the final playoff spot in the East, his back must be in pretty bad shape. I guess if you have him, you should be thankful he made it this far into the season without missing too many games.
The Bulls became the first team I know of to lose two players to concussions in practice as G/F Luol Deng and G/F Eric Piatkowski collided during practice Saturday. Of the concussed combo, Piatkowski received the worse end of the crash, as he required 15 stitches. Expect both to sit a few games; hopefully you weren't counting on either one anyway. A player many of you have counted on this year, C Zydrunas Ilgauskas, has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. I would expect him to return this week, but all I can find on his injury right now is that he has missed the Cavs' last two games. G/F James Posey continues to miss time with a bad Achilles'. After playing an astounding eight consecutive games, iron man PG Jamaal Tinsley has missed the last two games with a sore right Achilles'; if you were counting on Tinsley to remain healthy for the remainder of the season, I have a highly profitable business you might be interested in buying. G/F Jalen Rose is still bothered by plantar fascitis in his left foot; his missed-games tally for this injury is now at four games. And finally, G/F Ricky Davis missed Sunday's game with a strained groin. Davis is day-to-day, and when he does play will see reduced minutes so that the Timberwolves can take a look at younger players.
So, there you go, the latest in the world of injuries. Considering this is the final week in most leagues, remember that this week is actually a week-and-a-half. Many game providers don't list a player's games-played for Monday through Wednesday of next week. Also note that you will not get to reset your lineup next Monday, so the players you start this week will also start for you next week. Good luck this week!
