Mar. 27 -- Slow week for basketball injuries, unless you count failed NCAA Tournament Brackets as basketball injuries. Which I do. However, while the body count is especially light this week, the "Welcome Back" section is a star-studded "who's who" of recent rehabs. Enjoy!
Lakers F Kwame Brown injured his hamstring over the weekend, making his status for the upcoming week murky. Brown may likely play through the injury, but at the possible expense of his fantasy numbers. If you have options at forward, this may be a good week to use them.
G Baron Davis is experiencing continued discomfort due to his sprained ankle, making it unlikely that he'll play at all this week. Bench Baron if you haven't already.
C Cuttino Mobley was forced to miss a game over the weekend after spraining his ankle. Mobley may sit another game or two, butt the injury isn't thought to be serious.
The C Alonzo Mourning injury situation seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Originally thought to be out for only a couple of weeks, it now looks as if Alonzo will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a torn calf muscle. Obviously, your fantasy team will need to turn to plan B immediately. Meanwhile, the problems in the paint continue for Miami because....
C Shaquille O'Neal jammed his thumb nearly a week ago. His sprained right thumb isn't so bad as to send the big man to the bench, but with Alonzo injured, Shaq will be forced to play thru this and future minor injuries. This fact may not affect your fantasy team, but it should make Pistons fans very happy.
Minnesota's G Trenton Hassell has been forced to sit out because of an ankle injury. In the meantime, look for G Rashad McCants to see an increase in playing time.
F Kenyon Martin has been a recurring character in this column, and this week is no exception. While the forward should be described as "day-to-day" for the rest of the season, there is something about his health we can know with some certainty: he's going to be limited to under 25 minutes a game for the remainder of the season. This curbs Martin's fantasy value from here on out.
G T.J. Ford pulled a hamstring muscle earlier in the week, and sat out Friday's game as he recuperated from the injury. Ford isn't expected to miss much more time, but while he's sidelined G Charlie Bell will get the majority of Ford's minutes.
Atlanta's G Salim Stoudamire will miss the remainder of the season after spraining a ligament in his left elbow. As a bench player, his fantasy value was already limited, but his absence from the Hawks means that G Joe Johnson will probably see an increase in his minutes.
Also out for the season is C Channing Frye. The Knicks center has damage in his knee ligaments, and will be spared from suffering through the remainder of New York's season (proving that sometimes injuries can be a good thing...).
F Jermaine O'Neal returned to the hardwood after missing 24 games due to a groin tear. His minutes and numbers have been limited since his return, but both should improve moving forward. Activate him ASAP.
F Amare Stoudemire finally made his 2005-06 season debut, and while it's great to see Amare back on the court, don't expect a major fantasy contribution from Stoudemire. However, keeper-leaguers should feel free to get their hands on Amare should the opportunity present itself.
G Allen Iverson was back in action, returning earlier in the week from a lingering ankle sprain. A.I.'s been a scoring machine since his return and should be activated immediately.
F Keith Van Horn is back in the box scores. After missing 11 games, the Mavericks forward's knee has been medically cleared for action. It may take a few games for Van Horn to find his groove, but Keith should be a safe start from here on out.
F Gerald Wallace returned to action. Briefly. Wallace's calf injury recovered to the point that Gerald could resume his balling-duties, but took a Shaquille O'Neal elbow to the jaw during his first game back which caused Wallace to leave the game immediately. Understandably so: Shaq isn't exactly small. Wallace, however, should be fine from here on out.
