There's no time for fluff this week, so let’s get to some NBA nuggets. I basically go through the five positions and comment on things that I’ve seen around the league over the past week. I try to give you the heads-up on position battles, injuries, hot and cold streaks, upcoming schedules, and how you can get the edge on your league-mates from my analysis. So, let’s get cracking...
Point Guards
Deron Williams, UTA – Williams was unbelievable Friday night. In 33 minutes, he hit 11 of 12 shots from the floor, four of four from three-point land, and two of two from the charity stripe. On Wednesday, he scored only four points in 17 minutes, and he scored eight points in 22 minutes on Tuesday. So what are we to make of all this? Williams could be strong down the stretch, but he won't shoot that well again this season, and he'll have his nights with foul trouble and games where his shot just won't fall. The bottom line is, if he's on the waiver wire in shallow leagues, he can probably stay there, unless you have room on your bench and are scrounging for assists.
Antonio Daniels, WAS – I've got to pimp my man Daniels one more time this season. He scored 17 points and dished out six assists on Friday night. That makes 35 in his past seven games, for a five assist per game average. He's averaging double-digit points, so even in shallow leagues, those in need of assists should look his way. Readers of this column in deeper leagues should have rostered him long ago.
Jamal Tinsley, IND – Here's another player that I've mentioned many times before. About a month ago, I said he was worth getting for the stretch run. He scored 20 points and dished out six assists Friday night. He could very well get hurt again, but if he's out there on the waiver wire, you have to grab him. The Pacers have four more four-game weeks on the slate, and he seems to be favored over Sarunas Jasikevicius right now. Though Anthony Johnson will still play a lot, Tinsley should get enough minutes to produce for you.
Sebastian Telfair, POR – Telfair has had a wasted year, with his inconsistency, injury, and subsequent playing time problems. Thinking about next year, though, he's still only 20 years old and has a bright future in the NBA. You should easily be able to grab him late in fantasy drafts next season. He'll make for a good upside pick. Why do I mention this now? He scored 24 points in 26 minutes Friday night. You can safely ignore him for the rest of this season, though.
Shooting Guards
Jerry Stackhouse, DAL – With the Josh Howard injury (see below), Stackhouse has gotten the minutes lately and has done pretty well with them. He has traditionally had trouble staying healthy himself, but those in shallower leagues should take note. He'll probably continue to do well over the next few weeks. He scored 17 points in 32 minutes Friday night and should continue to average around 14 points per game.
Bonzi Wells, SAC – Bonzi played 30 minutes last night, just about his most in a game since returning from his injury. He scored just ten points, but he pulled down 17(!) rebounds. Kevin Martin, who seemed to have taken Bonzi's job, played just 25 minutes Friday. Bonzi could be getting his job back here, folks. The Kings play three consecutive four-game weeks starting Monday, so both Wells and Martin should be able to help your fantasy squad.
Small Forwards
Josh Smith, ATL – Smith is definitely a player to grab in shallow or salary cap leagues. The Hawks play all four-game weeks over their next four weeks, and he has been getting heavy minutes every game. Depending on the night, he can give you points, rebounds, assists, or blocks, or even all of the above. In deeper leagues, keep an eye on Josh Childress and Salim Stoudamire down the stretch (mainly because of those four-game weeks, as neither player averages over 30 minutes per game).
Josh Howard, DAL – Howard is out indefinitely with a bum hamstring. With the playoffs on the horizon, he might not play meaningful regular season minutes again this year. If you own him, it's time to make other arrangements.
Power Forwards
Donyell Marshall, CLE – Marshall scored four points in eight minutes Friday night. He has been terrible for weeks now and shouldn't be anywhere near anybody's fantasy roster, but I'd just like use him as an example to point out how much of a risk it is drafting a player on a new team. Sure, many players go to new teams and do well, but on draft day, when comparing two similar players, I'd much rather take the one who is on the same team with the same coach as the season before. Superior talents usually settle in on their new teams and do great, but even they usually struggle at first. Middle-to-lesser talents often fail to match or exceed their production from the season before. Change of scenery is just one less variable that I want to worry about on draft day.
Chris Bosh, TOR – Even though I write this column, I still sometimes fail to pay attention to the "obvious" stars that I don't own. I'm much more concerned with the lesser players that I might be able to either trade for pr pick up as free agents. I mention Bosh here as a reminder to those that may not have realized how he has grown this year. He scored 27 points and pulled down ten rebounds Friday night. He scored 31 in a game earlier this week. It's spelled, "S-T-U-D." Bosh is pushing for a first-round fantasy selection next season. He is just 21 and will only get better and better.
Centers
Andrew Bogut, MIL – With the recent re-emergence of Joe Smith, Bogut hasn't done much lately. That's good for you, as it should depress his value a bit in next season's fantasy draft. Smith should continue to cut into his production for the rest of this season, but Bogut could really break out next season. A nice bonus is his assists from the center position. He had three on Friday and has averaged 3.5 over his past seven games.
Jake Tsakalidis, MEM –Tsakalidis looks like a good player to use down the stretch this season. He got into a little foul trouble Friday night, just scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds, but on Tuesday, he scored 19 points and grabbed 16 boards. Memphis plays four games in each of the next two weeks, so he's at least worth using then.
That’s all for this edition. Check back in a week for more fantasy basketball fun.
