Just like "Last Call" at a bar, where you suddenly get a little more desperate and not nearly as picky, we’ve got the fantasy hoops equivalent. For people in leagues where they have been decimated by injuries or really deep leagues or just need a long shot name for one week that is definitely available on their wire. Fantasy Basketball Experts Andy Behrens and Christopher Harris search through the dregs to help you make a one week pick-up you won’t regret in the morning.
Mar. 24 --
Andy says: So here we are in the lull between the World Baseball Classic and baseball's opening day. My NCAA brackets are pretty much fishwrap. The NFL Draft is months away, and all the good free-agent signings are behind us. My poor, regrettable Bulls have faded from the Eastern Conference playoff race. Basically, Chris, all I have to entertain me in the week ahead is fantasy hoops. And all my teams---save one unfortunate squad built around Jermaine O'Neal and Emeka Okafor---are still in the title race. Tell me Harris, which waiver players do you like in next week's games?
Chris says: So you're saying I shouldn't have had Kansas going to the Final Four? And by the way, how can you say the most exciting football free-agent signings are behind us? Why, Mike Vanderjagt just signed with the Cowboys today. In their never-ending quest to employ every jerk in the world, Dallas also announced they've asked the ghost of Slobodan Milosevic to haunt the visitors' locker room of Texas Stadium. That Jerry Jones is always thinking: imagine the marketing possibilities!
Derek Fisher, PG, GS: He's going fast, but you may still be able to grab the former Laker and ride him through Baron Davis's latest injury, which I think will probably sideline the tempestuous Davis for the rest of the year. Fisher has averaged nearly 13 points and over six assists a game this month, and that's not half bad. I know this one's a bit "un-Last-Call-like," in that Fisher may be gone from your league's scrap heap, so I'll throw in a scoring-guard alternative I mentioned earlier in the year: Luther Head. The Rockets' main man at the two, David Wesley, is done for at least a week and maybe a month. On Tuesday in Dallas, Head followed up a 20-point effort against the Clippers with 16 against the Mavs, along with seven boards and three dishes. He's also playing more than 40 minutes a game with Wesley gone.
Kwame Brown, C, LAL: I went small with my first, so let's back up that selection with some size. He's never going to justify his draft selection. Get over it. But for our purposes---a last-ditch shot at stealing some categories or scaring up some head-to-head magic---Kwame could do damage. Chris Mihm is done for the Lakers, so there's no one behind Brown threatening his starting slot. He'll block over a shot a game, score in double digits and, if Phil Jackson can get through to him, drag down six or seven boards each night. Obviously, tread here only if you're desperate for size, but at least there are big-man minutes to be head in Tinseltown.
Andy says: Okay, I think I might be recycling some 2005 adds today. It happens. We've been doing this for awhile, and the cast of characters is not necessarily dynamic. But certain players just don't go out of style....
Zaza Pachulia, C, ATL: No, he's not a Gabor sister. There is no Eva Pachulia. Zaza is a 6-11 Hawk. He's also an old Chris Harris fave from back in the day. Pachulia is a relatively useful member of a wretched roster. He's like the Jim Everett of the modern NBA: you might not be thrilled to have him on an actual team, but he's become a pretty fair fantasy starter. He's also available on the waiver heap in more than 50 percent of all leagues. Pachulia posted double-doubles in three straight games before finding himself in foul trouble on Tuesday night against the Sixers. Zaza's 11.9 points per game and 8.3 boards compare favorably to the per-game numbers of many universally-owned centers, including Jamaal Magloire, Carlos Boozer, and Chris Kaman. Atlanta loses...errr, Atlanta plays four games next week. I can't wait for the Pachulia-Krstic post battle on Friday. That's NBA League Pass at its best, mister.
Matt Harpring, GF, UTA: All right, maybe Matt Harpring went out of style in 2003. But whatever. He's put together a streak of nice games for the Jazz lately, although he's been a little foul-prone. Harpring is getting 30-plus minutes each night, collecting boards, points, and---somewhat surprisingly---steals. He has eight steals in his last four games. Harpring qualifies at multiple positions, so you should be able to find a slot for him. Next Saturday's start against the Blazers looks particularly good. Deron Williams is another guy getting minutes for Utah and, finally, putting up some numbers. He's about 60 percent owned right now, though, so he doesn't quite qualify for Last Call waiver flotsam status. But he's close. And if he's lurking out there among the free agents in your league, he's worth considering. He's averaging 18.7 points and seven assists over the Jazz's last three games.
Chris says: Ah, yes, Zaza. I agree, Andy: he's a better call than Kwame for folks hurting for a center. As for Harpring...well, my momma said if you can't say anything nice.... But Deron Williams is up there with Fisher on the list of dramatically upticking guards here at the NBA season's conclusion. In leagues where they're free, they should be owned immediately. If our readers own them, they should get them in their lineups immediately. Of such stuff are fantasy titles won.
