Dec. 5 -- Hey, where’d Gerald Wallace go? Last week’s upstart No. 4 rated player is this week’s number 33. The difference?

A three-game road trip which has seen Wallace averaging just 10.7 points on 15-of-34 shooting combined with a total of 13 rebounds, one less than he had in that November 26 tilt against the Wizards. Yes, such is life in the rankings for one endowed with a relatively limited sample size; it’s up with every fantastic game and down with every average one.

Even four games off, such as the ones Wallace missed midway through November, can cause a statistical oddity when those four games weigh 25 percent of the season so far, as was the case last week. That one game versus Washington, combined with his opening night effort versus the Bulls, his third game against the Celtics and his triumphant return against the Knicks (see game-by-game summary) means that, in half his games to that point, Gerald Wallace had done a fairly reasonable impression of LeBron James.

Now, the counterweight to those four games, the statistics which average out his numbers to the Gerald Wallace we know, has grown by three more games, and that counterweight has balanced him out. You see the truth. You still want him around for the defensive numbers he gives you, but a scoring machine, he is not.

Why am I dwelling on Gerald Wallace and his numbers from last week? It’s because I want to pound it into your heads that rankings, at this time of year, can be wielded as a weapon against those who do not understand their subtle, fragile and deceitful nature.

Kind of like a Bond girl. So, be the one who takes advantage, not the one who gets taken. Kind of like James Bond.

Now, go trade that Marcus Camby fella you’ve been holding onto so tightly, while you still can.
