We are finally at the end of a long, difficult (for Spike and McKay, anyway) regular season. There were no shockers last week, and in a way I'm pretty happy about that. I was dreading having to deal with the mess of tie-breakers, complaints to the Commissioner's Office, and calls for my job. We have a nice, clean top four:
1. Bill Simmons (17-4)
The "Oh-man-that-was-close!" Award goes to Samuel L. Jackson, who was second only to Bill Simmons in points last week (by less than 1.0), and came a game short of the playoffs at 12-9. Let's take a closer look at those who missed the cut:
5. Samuel L. Jackson (12-9)
This really couldn't get any cleaner. No ties for the four playoff seeds, either. The seeds are as they read above. Let's look at this week's match-ups.
Bill Simmons [1] vs. Tony Potts [4]
These two teams met once this season. Simmons handled Potts by the tune of 906-781 in Week 11. Now without Dwyane Wade (whom he cut last week), Simmons is 100% healthy. He boasts a lineup that is so strong that he's forced to bench Kevin Durant and his three games. He has 33 games in all this week. But don't sleep on Tony Potts. Potts has arguably this season's best fantasy player not named LeBron James (Chris Paul) and a full 36-game week. Will the three game advantage be enough? Potts' lineup isn't nearly as strong, having such fantastic liabilities as Mark Blount and Mikki Moore. Prediction: The three-game advantage will make this match-up very interesting, but Simmons will come out on top.
Zach Gilford [2] vs. Kenny Smith [3]
Gilford has failed to score 900 points or more in five consecutive weeks. Kenny Smith -- in the midst of his eight game winning streak and 13 of 14 -- has scored 900 or more in three of his last four match-ups. Gilford is healthy, but has only 31 games played this week. Luckily, so does Kenny. Gilford's team is built around Allen Iverson and Andre Iguodala, but is otherwise quite mediocre (how long have I been saying this??). Kenny Smith has LeBron James and the hottest player in fantasy basketball, Lamar Odom. Granted, his team isn't incredibly impressive otherwise, but HE HAS LEBRON JAMES! Prediction: It's Kenny's world, and we're all living in it. By the way, there are also a bunch of consolation games. They are, of course, for consolation. You get nothing and you'll like it! |
