Very little changed last week, as six of the top seven teams in the NBA Cares Celebrity Fantasy League won. How does that happen? They beat the other six teams. That is what they call "expert analysis."
Bill Simmons held onto first place, squeaking by Donald Faison by 27 points. Faison has now lost five straight games and six of seven. Anyone there?
Bernie Mac enjoyed the third highest point total of the week. Unfortunately, he faced off against Tony Potts, the team with the most points. Such are the breaks in head-to-head action. Bernie just needs to play better defense. He's the Loyola Marymount of fantasy hoops.
Zach Gilford lost for the first time in six weeks, falling to George Lopez by 26 points. Lopez is dangerous. If he makes the playoffs, anything can happen. This week will be a very important match-up for him (more to follow).
Kenny Smith had a bye (he beat Spike Lee) and has now won nine of his last 10. I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago, but don't lose sight of the fact that Kenny has the lowest Points Against of any team in the league. I'm calling it. Kenny's a fluke.
Let's get to this week's match-ups:
Bill Simmons (13-4) vs. George Lopez (11-6)
Officially the "Game of the Week." It's "officially" because I said it is. Plus, once you add the quotes, it's officially official. George Lopez smells the playoffs, but a loss here will make things more interesting. Both teams have 32 games this week, but Simmons enjoys a healthy squad. The injury to Caron Butler will be the difference between winning and losing for George Lopez (and everyone who owns Caron).
Prediction: Lopez falls back into a battle for the final playoff spot, and Simmons continues to separate himself from the pack. Simmons brags.
Tony Potts (12-5) vs. Adam McKay (4-13)
After shocking the world by winning three straight, McKay has lost his last two. It is now official: Adam McKay is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. That said, his team did put on a show last week, scoring 875 points to Will Ferrell's 925.
Prediction: McKay begins resting players in preparation for next season. Potts wins.
Zach Gilford (12-5) vs. Will Ferrell (10-7)
Considering Potts has an automatic win, Gilford needs a big win to keep pace. That said, a loss would be a huge blow to Ferrell's playoff hopes. Plenty on the line this week. Record aside, these are two very even teams -- as the 200 points that separate them would indicate.
Prediction: Two game advantage for Ferrell, so he gets it. Things just got nutty in the chase for playoff positioning.
Kenny Smith (10-7) vs. Donald Faison (7-10)
Two teams headed in opposite directions. Kenny's won nine of ten (though he's had his share of luck along the way), and Faison has lost eight of 10. Faison also has the third least Points For and Points Against, so his losses can't be attributed to poor luck. Donald has a two-game advantage, which could keep it interesting.
Prediction: Kenny wins, prompting me to again bore you with statistics supporting the luck of Kenny next week.
Samuel L. Jackson (9-8) vs. Spike Lee (4-13)
A bye can't come at a better time for Samuel L. Jackson, who desperately needs a win to stay in the hunt. This follows beating James Denton, the league's other 4-13 team. The scheduling gods are doing all they can to help Jackson. Spike's team is not good, to put it nicely, so let's stop wasting time.
Prediction: Jackson pulls to 10-8. Considering Kenny and Will both win, Sam won't be able to gain any ground.
Bernie Mac (7-10) vs. James Denton (3-14)
Bernie's pretty close to out of it at this point, but nothing like an easy win to help his team's morale. Based on points alone, Bernie would hold the fourth spot in the playoffs. Sorry Mr. Mac. Sure I just made your day.
Prediction: Bernie gets some love from the fantasy gods.
